HEALTH & BEAUTY Be Cancer Safe

As more people in South March Yorkshire are diagnosed

with cancer than the UK average, Be Cancer SAFE Barnsley and Rotherham is working in the community to break down barriers and normalise conversations about cancer in the hope that more people in our area will take part in routine screening or go to their GP with concerns.

Whether you’re taking part in a bake-off style competition, wearing your pyjamas to work, doing 10,000 steps a day to walk all over cancer, or just helping other people to recognise the signs and symptoms, join in this spring to help raise funds and awareness to keep fighting cancer and saving lives.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women but there is currently no reliable or effective screening programme and it isn’t picked up during cervical screening.

It affects all age groups and is the biggest gynaecological killer in women; although survival rates are improving, just 35 percent of women live for ten years or more after diagnosis. This could be attributed to late diagnosis, with two thirds of women diagnosed once the cancer has spread.

Symptoms are: • Persistent stomach pain or bloating • Difficulty eating or loss of appetite • Needing to urinate more often

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, mainly affecting those aged 50 and above. It is slow developing and often symptoms don’t appear until the prostate is large enough to affect the urethra, which is why many signs affect urination.

April

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK with the second worst survival rates. It generally affects people over 50, with almost 60 percent of new cases diagnosed in those over 70. Routine screening is offered for everyone over 60 every two years until they reach 75. It is a home test that picks up cancers in the early stage, meaning better chance of successful treatment and survival.

Symptoms are: • Persistent bleeding from your bottom or blood in your poo

• Persistent/unexplained change in your bowel habits

• Pain or lump in your tummy that won’t go away

As always, if you have any concerns, please speak to your GP. These symptoms are not always be cancer-related so it is best to seek professional advice for any worries you may have.

Symptoms are: • Increased need to pee • Straining while peeing

• Bladder feeling like it hasn’t emptied There is no routine screening programme but some of the most commonly used diagnostic tests are PSA blood tests, MRI scan and a physical examination of your prostate.
