IMPROVED RATING FOR COLLEGE

DACHSER IS DIGGING IN

From left: Peter Kraus, Logistics Manager, Ecomal Europe GmbH, Markus Riesterer, Director Gewerbepark Breisgau, Ralph Bartsch, General Contractor Unglehrt, Michael Gaudlitz General Manager Dachser Logistics Center Freiburg, Michael Schilling, COO Road Logistics Dachser and Thomas Hörmann, Head of Construction & Real Estate Dachser

Logistics provider Dachser has opened a new logistics centre in Freiburg, Germany. Covering a total area of 6,117

sqm, the new facility houses a transit terminal with 82 docking bays as well as a two-storey office building. The company invested around €22m in the location, where it has created 30 new jobs. Dachser, which has its UK head

office in Northampton, opened its first Freiburg branch in 1984. It was clear from the outset that, due to its proximity to several national borders, the city was the ideal location for a logistics hub to handle groupage transports to

Switzerland, France, and southwestern Germany. The existing branch in Freiburg-

Hochdorf grew steadily and has now reached the limit of its capacity. Sited to the southwest of Freiburg, the new logistics center offers ideal operating conditions as well as opportunities for expansion in the future. “For Dachser, the new facility’s

location, technical infrastructure, human resources, capacity, and expansion potential together form an important building block for growth in Europe and for further strengthening the network,” said Michael Schilling, COO road logistics at Dachser.

As things stand, the 160 Dachser

employees in Freiburg handle 260,000 metric tons of industrial goods a year—and the volume is increasing. “When it comes to our continued

growth in Freiburg, one thing is clear: good logistics needs good employees,” said Michael Gaudlitz, general manager Dachser Logistics Centre Freiburg. “That’s why, in addition to the 30

newly created roles, I’m delighted that nine new apprentices will be joining us as our new logistics center begins operations.”

Invu Services has considered a number of emerging trends that may affect businesses unless they take action in 2020. Uncertainty is often blamed for

business failure, yet in 80% of cases insolvency practitioners point to poor working capital management as the route cause. Finance director Ian Smith said:

“Given a rising trend of failures in 2019, all businesses should take stock of their working capital management in 2020. “Knowing what data you have,

who has access to it and how it is used is becoming a critical success factor for a business. This does not come without risk. “Failure to comply with GDPR

Ian Smith

requirements can make processing personal data a significant liability.” Research by Invu suggests only 43% of businesses have improved

business processes to address compliance. Ian added: “In 2020 each

business needs to review the data it holds to ensure it is properly managed, secured and controlled. “In 2019, Microsoft identified an

average 11.5% performance improvement in businesses that adopted process automation and artificial intelligence. In 2020, this gap will continue to widen. “Each business needs to perform

a pragmatic review of business processes and identify those areas where it can take advantage of business process automation and artificial intelligence.” Invu offers software solutions to

help businesses manage working capital, control data and automate their business processes.

A good Ofsted grade for The Bedford College Group is great news for Further Education in the region. The news is especially

welcomed in Northamptonshire where Tresham College, now part of the Group, had previously been graded as inadequate by Ofsted. The merger, which took

place in August 2017, has been followed by some robust changes which have led to improved standards, performances and investment across the three campuses - Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough. Ian Pryce (pictured) CBE, principal and CEO of Bedford College for two decades, who led the development into the Group, said: “This is a fantastic inspection result. “Staff at Tresham have risen

to the challenge and can now claim it is a very good college. Just as pleasing, Bedford College has improved again on its previous inspection. “We can now rightly say we

are a very strong group of colleges. “We are grateful for the

support of SEMLEP who have invested in our redevelopment of the Wellingborough campus which will bring new life into the town centre and in our multi-million advanced engineering centre in Bedford which is a beacon for technology training. “Our Group was one of the

first colleges to make the grade under the new education inspection framework which is again tribute to our senior management team and staff.” The Bedford College Group

includes Bedford College, National College for Motorsport, Shuttleworth College, The Bedford Sixth Form and Tresham College.
