LEGAL CORNER
Monthly free legal clinics Every month Rebecca Weare and Beccy Bristow from Start Point Law hold free legal clinics at Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe libraries. Each clinic runs for two hours and is an opportunity for anyone with a legal issue to speak to either Rebecca or Beccy free of charge.
What sorts of problems can we help with? We both qualified as solicitors in 2003 and we worked for large law firms for fourteen years before setting up Start Point Law together in January 2017. Rebecca’s specialist area is dispute resolution and Beccy specialises in Wills, lasting power of attorneys, estate administration, inheritance tax and probate. We each have over 17 years legal experience so we can usually help with most queries although sometimes we do recommend someone with specific expertise or other sources of free information and assistance. Having worked for so many years in the legal profession in Devon we usually know someone who can help you if we can’t.

Typical queries There is no such thing as a typical query and we never know what to expect, but there are recurring themes. Wills – We deal with lots of queries about Wills. We can help you decide if you need to make a new Will - your Will may be years old; or perhaps you have tried to write your own Will and want to make sure that it does do what you intended. Lasting Power of Attorney – We talk to lots of people about LPAs. Typical questions are about the difference between the two different types of LPA, or when to register an LPA. Often people are unsure whether to appoint all their children or just one, whether to appoint replacement attorneys and whether to appoint them jointly or severally? Disputes or claims – We are often asked for advice by people who have been disappointed with something they have purchased or a service that has been provided and we can explain how small claims
