40 A History of Kingsbridge and Salcombe
A re-publication of A History of Kingsbridge and Salcombe was launched on September 14th for the celebration of Kingsbridge as a Market town for 800 years. Written by the late Anne Born, this enhanced third edition has been republished by her daughter Caroline Born. Judging by all the regular requests to the local bookshops for a detailed history of the Salcombe and Kingsbridge area this re-issue is much needed. Anne’s lifetime in Salcombe imbued a deep affiliation and affection to the landscape and buildings that inspired her poetry and led her to write the first edition of The History of Kingsbridge and Salcombe in 1986. She found that poetry and history accord well, and the rich history of Kingsbridge and Salcombe and their South Hams hinterland inspired her to extensively research both documentary records and field work. She especially found talking to South Hams people especially rewarding. Having links to local families she knew before the Second World War, she had an intuitive grasp of local customs and language. An authoritative book on the geography, geology and long history of this beautiful area, the writer was also proficient in many arenas. Anne Born was a geologist, historian, poet and translator. One of Britain’s foremost translators of Danish, she translated over 60 modern Scandinavian novels and poetry collections and won both the prestigious ‘Independent Foreign Fiction Prize’ and the
Impac Dublin literary prize. Gordon Waterhouse, a local teacher and naturalist,
