The Tractor Run 2020

n extraordinary adventure began to unfold last
summer, when a small but valiant group of Unlikely ‘Lads’ were inspired by the energy and passion of local veteran, John Foale. John, now 74 years of age, has earned the respect of many as a former farmer and vin- tage tractor restorer. From ‘his’ barstool pulpit at the Fisherman’s Rest in Aveton Gifford, John’s views, loyal- ties and dreams have come to pervade the thoughts of those around him.
Like most of us, he has great admiration for the team who run and support the Devon Air Ambulance. It’s a credit to Devon communities that together we raise the £7 million needed to keep our two air ambulances saving lives. When John dared to share his extraordi- nary ambition, to drive a restored vintage tractor from
John O’ Groats to Land’s End – to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance - he lit the fuse paper. It’s true - he who dares – wins. No-one laughed at him. Instead, other regulars, and some irregulars, have got together to pool their skills and contacts to raise the money for him to achieve his ambition. In fact, “Why just one Air Ambulance service – why not more of them?” That evening was a long one and their enthusiasm gathered momentum. A one thousand mile journey through unfamiliar ter ritory. What an adventure! What an achievement! What a worthy cause! The landlord called ‘time’ and they went home. It could have all ended there. But it did not. John took up the gauntlet and bought a 40-year old Leyland tractor. The Tractor Run was born. The Tractor Run team have been busy raising sponsorship, organising fund raising events, building a social media and website presence, defining the route and creating regional networks of supporters and events along the route.
John and his valiant team of supporters introduced the ugly duckling to the world and launched The Tractor Run at the Aveton Gifford Classic Car Show in August 2019.
