A few facts to be going on with…


Meetings: Pool sessions at Kingsbridge Quayside Leisure Centre on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.


Number of members: Around 100


Cost: £12 annual club membership and monthly swim fees from £20 per month.


The objective: To enjoy swim- ming and compete in events from club to national level.


History: Kingsbridge Kingfishers started 21 years ago, shortly after Quayside Leisure Centre opened its doors.

ive times a week Quayside pool looks set for business with some seriously talented


young swimmers pacing up and down the lanes. Kingsbridge Kingfishers Swim- ming Club trains competent swim- mers to a competitive level. Head Coach Mat Cusack said:


“Swim schools teach fundamentals and we continue this route but also develop more technical skills. We hone those swimming techniques, building speed and endurance as well as technical knowledge in both training and competing, to make swimmers more efficient and ready for competitions, including inter club competitions, team galas, individual open meets and county and regional championships. “We’re also very proud as a club to have many past swimmers


who’ve gone on to continue their careers in the aquatic field.” To join the club, swimmers


attend a swim trial, where they swim a couple of lengths of each stroke and show they’re ready and willing to train. Mat added: “Normally they come


through from the swim schools. However, we do take swimmers from all areas. “We hold three try outs a year, based around school half term times. There’s no charge for the trials and they’re very friendly easy-going events.” Kingfisher members are banded


into bronze, silver and gold squads. Bronze is development of skills, silver is training to train and gold is training to compete. The club also has a masters session for senior swimmers, which welcomes new
