“Change the way you see things, and the things you see will change”
Taking care of our mental wellbeing is as important as looking after our physical health. Georgina at empathica explains how counselling and therapy can help achieve this.
S
pring may be replacing dark winter days but what if you feel there are no brighter days ahead for you? A problem may seem insur-
mountable to you, or it may be an accumulation of ‘everything’; you may not even realise what ‘it’ is… But a trained therapist/counsellor will and, with their help, you can learn to cope with problems, control situations, and move on with a better life. Georgina at Empathica Therapy adopts a seemingly simple philosophy - “Change the way you see things, and the things you see will change.” However, the science, training, experience and qualifications which enable her to put that philosophy into effect are any- thing but simple! And why did Georgina spend years attaining that ex-

For me, it was and is transformational, life changing in so many ways.” There are some misconceptions and stigma about counselling and therapy. Also, the two vary yet often overlap. Counselling is usually short term, focussing around a specific issue, assisting you to identify that issue, addressing it and encouraging you to take positive steps to resolve it. Psychotherapy is longer term, designed to help you with issues that have built up over time. It identifies emotional issues, explores the background to them and can then help you understand your thoughts, feelings and actions more clearly. counselling is different for everyone but it certainly isn’t because you are
the problem which needs fixing! TV representations of therapeutic sessions are often misleading; some of the more extreme exponents of therapy are off putting. “It isn’t just having a chat over a cup of tea; neither is it lying on a couch whilst some remote stranger scribbles notes, asking “And how did that make you feel?” For some, being in a non-judgmental environment
where they can talk openly in total confidence is important. For others, being listened to without being told what to do enables them to find their own voice. Sadly for too many, their therapeutic relationship may
