MOTORING

Peugeot’s stylish estate

The new Peugeot 508 is one classy-looking car, so if you want to keep up that mantle with practicality, then one could look no further than the SW version here. We sent motoring journalist Nick Jones to try out that theory, and he analyses whether the 508 could even provide an alternative to the might of the premium German cavalry.

The first thing I notice upon getting the keys to the Peugeot 508 is the sheer amount of boot space this SW version offers at the side of the saloon; as well as the higher rear roof profile, which provides more headroom for the rear passengers. It’s still a swanky- looking car, so much so that if you were to cover the badge up, I’m guessing few would state ‘Peugeot’. Engine-wise, the SW shares all the engines in the

range from that of the saloon – which is no bad thing. You can have a 1.6-litre petrol with two power outputs, one with 180 horsepower and the other 225. Then we get to the diesels – three to choose from, a 1.5-litre 130 horsepower unit, and then two 2.0-litre ones producing 160 and 180 horsepower respectively. The small diesel has a manual gearbox, all other variants have an 8-speed automatic as standard. Given

the choice, it’s a real toss-up between the two 180 horsepower models, all coming down to personal preference on either petrol or diesel. Internally it really is quite classy in here – I’ve got

Peugeot’s i-Cockpit, which means a small steering wheel that actually sits below your line of sight and you see over it rather than through it – and it works. The digital screen is customisable and that means you can set it up how you like, and it replaces the traditional dials; fit and finish is also exemplary in here. In summary, Peugeot has come on leaps and bounds

and creates a real dilemma, posing the serious question about automatically choosing a BMW, Audi or Mercedes and a few others beside. Rest assured, the 508 is a contender and a viable alternative. The 508 SW commands around £1,500 above that of the saloon.
