INTERVIEW

East Midlands businesses have got a lot to love

The annual Chamber-backed Love Business expo and conference has become a firm fixture in the local business calendar, giving thousands of businesses the platform to network, connect and showcase their products and services. Business Network spoke with Steve Megson, Managing Director of Love Business and founder of Quiet Storm Solutions, about how the event celebrates everything that is great about Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire

Steve Megson is a proud East Midlander. More so, he reserves a particular affection for the three

counties that make up the Chamber’s heartland… Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire. Born and bred in Derby, he studied at the Derby College

of Art before starting his employment career, as a graphic designer, in Ashby De La Zouch, near Leicester. He went on to launch his business, Quiet Storm Solutions, in nearby Whitwick, more than 30 years ago and over the past three decades, has worked extensively with clients across the three counties, helping them to solve their sales, marketing and people challenges. This has given him true experience-based insight not

only into what make the three counties tick, but also into the way they fit together to create the complex business infrastructure that sits at the heart of the regional economy. It’s an alchemy that he believes is unique to this part

of the UK. “We don’t know how lucky we are in this part of the

region,” he said. “We’ve got so many fantastic assets here, but when it comes to promoting them to the outside world and really shouting about what it is, when combined, that makes our three counties so great, it’s just not joined up at all. “There’s a lot of talk about the three counties

presenting a united front, and the Chamber has done fantastic work to bring people together in that regard, but we still seem to lack that identity and that pack mentality that places like the North East, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands have, that can bring influence to bear and affect real change. “When you look at the East Midlands, we have some

fantastic advantages over other regions and when you look at the businesses operating here, we punch well above our weight. We've got the UK’s biggest manufacturers in construction based here, the biggest manufacturers in engineering, in automotive, all within a 35-mile radius of the airport. “Plus, you've got great motorway links and the busiest

air freight and cargo operation in the country, which is set to level up even further thanks to the East Midlands Gateway development. “It's a great place to do business. “Yet our weakness, if any, is our failure to celebrate our

collective successes. We’ve got three good-sized cities and counties here in this part of the East Midlands, with a great mix of businesses, but they are all very insular. “They do not cross-fertilise, but if we can create

something that enables them to do so, then it will break down those borders. “Love Business does that, because it sits right in the

middle and attracts people from all corners of the three cities and counties. “That’s what’s key — it’s that central approach, rather

than the three-city approach, that will bring people together. But then we’ve got to shout about it.”
