THE FIRST WORD

Welcome to this month’s edition of Business Network – the first of a new year and a new decade. A lot has happened since we went to print on the previous edition of the magazine. For a start, we have a new Conservative Government which commanded a healthy majority at the December snap election. We have also now left the European Union as of 31 January, after Boris Johnson’s

Brexit Withdrawal Bill passed through both Houses either side of the festive period. Of course, that is by no means the end of the matter. The new Government must

now deliver on its pre-election promises and regain the confidence of the business community after years of uncertainty. Equally, while much water has passed under the bridge in relation to Brexit, the

fact of the matter is that the process has only just begun as the UK looks to tread a new path outside of the EU and this will undoubtedly take time and present myriad difficulties and opportunities. These difficulties and opportunities are born out in the latest Quarterly Economic

Survey findings from the Chamber for Q4 2019 and these findings are explored in greater detail – along with what the future may look like for our region and the UK as a whole – in the Politics section on pages 56 and 57. Finally, the theme of February’s edition is Hospitality. We speak with Steve Megson, Managing Director of Chamber patron Quiet Storm, about how the East Midlands has fantastic assets that make the region a real force to be reckoned with in this area, while, in the focus feature, we take a look at how the hospitality industry not only supports a vast amount of jobs and employment opportunities, but also makes a significant economic contribution.

Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
