Purpose Media joins in honouring football legend


Barry Newton, of Alfreton, has given more than 40 years of voluntary service to the Swanwick- based Sleetmoor United and has been awarded a British Empire Medal by HM The Queen for services to grassroots football and young people in Derbyshire. To mark the occasion, Purpose


Media is treating Barry and his wife Janet to a luxury experience on the day he collects his medal, pledging to buy him a new suit, first-class train tickets and an overnight stay in a top London hotel. Barry was nominated for the


honour by Purpose Media’s Managing Director Matt Wheatcroft. Matt was Chairman of Sleetmoor United until he stepped down last September and has seen at first hand the support and dedication Barry has shown both to the club and to helping thousands of young people over the years. Matt said: “I’ve known Barry for


several years and am awe-inspired by the selfless service he has given to the club over the past four decades. I’m pleased he’s finally got recognition for his dedication and service over the years. “He’s been tirelessly helping the


club and local youngsters during that time, working many hours a week in all weathers to keep it ticking over. Barry is an incredibly modest and humble guy who would never put himself forward for anything like this, which is why I wanted to nominate him, because if anyone deserves an honour for serving the local community in such a way, it’s Barry.” Sleetmoor United was founded


in 2017, when ADASC FC, GFC Alfreton Girls and Ladies and Leabrooks Juniors FC joined together. Barry served in a variety of


voluntary roles at ADASC, including head groundsman, secretary, coach,

and was Club Chairman on three separate occasions, becoming Honorary Life President when the clubs united. Barry said: “I was both shocked


and proud when I learned I was to be given this honour from the Queen. I don’t do what I do for the recognition, I do it for the love of


Council helps tackle climate change


As part of its commitment to tackling climate issues, Leicester County Council has organised the delivery of 20 electric bikes which are being loaned out to businesses to encourage active and sustainable travel to and from work. The new bikes, funded with assistance from the Department for Transport and purchased from the Leicester Ebike Centre, are part of a wider initiative to promote sustainable methods of transport, following the announced climate emergency in May last year.


Blake Pain, lead member for environment and


transport, said: “Travelling actively has many benefits from helping people to keep healthy, reducing the cost of travelling at the same time as reducing our own personal carbon emissions and helping ease traffic congestion. “Electric bikes are a great way to start cycling. A


big part of our commitment to tackling climate change is helping people to consider alternative choices and provide an environment where those choices can be explored.”
