When it comes to eating out, prepare to be seriously spoilt for choice in Dartmouth with the wide range of superb restaurants, pubs and cafés. The town boasts a selection of modern restaurants, cosy pubs, gourmet dining, elegant bars and traditional British fare such as the seaside favourite of fish and chips (The Wheelhouse in Dartmouth has been serving fish & chips for over 35 years). There’s a great pub in all the surrounding villages – be sure to check out the Sportsmans Arms, a traditional country pub on the main A3122 road into Dartmouth.
Much of what you eat locally is likely to have been grown or caught within a few miles of the town. Dartmouth is synonymous with good food and drink so take the opportunity to discover the taste of Devon with local produce on the menu at many pubs and restaurants. You are guaranteed the freshest local seafood caught just a few miles off the South Devon coastline
(including shellfish such as crab, scallops, oysters etc), and locally grown produce from the Devon countryside. As the widely renowned Rockfish (with popular restaurants in Dartmouth, Brixham, Torbay & Plymouth) would say it – “tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea”.
There is much to sample to suit all pockets and tastes with many restaurants and cafés providing vegetarian and gluten free menu choices. Award- winning restaurants such as The Seahorse (Mitch Tonks) and The Angel (Elly Wentworth, Master Chef Professional runner up) can match the very best in the UK. If it’s well-priced bistro fare you’re after, then check out the Bistro at Browns (Victoria Road) and the Anzac Bistro near Foss Street and not forgetting Kendricks in Fairfax Place where the atmosphere is often ‘buzzing’!
Children are also well catered for with family friendly cafés, pubs and restaurants around every corner. There are many that also welcome well- behaved dogs.
No stay or visit to Dartmouth should go without relaxing at a café with a hearty breakfast or morning coffee – the ever-popular Café Alf Resco has been voted one of the UK’s top 50 cafés. Make sure you enjoy a Devon cream tea – remember cream first, jam on top! As you’re by the seaside, then you must sample an ice cream from Dartmouth Ice Cream – they’ve been making homemade luxury ice cream since 1928; and a local crab sandwich from the Crab Shell - preferably whilst sat on the Embankment, but beware of the seagulls!
