59 VILLAGES ON THE DART

Kingswear The brightly coloured houses of Kingswear are a defining feature of the view from Dartmouth, but this charming village is definitely a destination in its own right. There is a strong community spirit with two cafes, a village shop, a post office, a sailing club and a heritage railway station where it’s possible to board a steam train to Paignton. Kingswear is also the starting point of many great walks and its pubs are the best place in the valley to catch the evening sun.

Kingswear Dittisham

Dittisham is a picturesque village on the banks of the River Dart, just two miles upstream from Dartmouth. Its café and pub make it a great place for those looking to indulge in a seafood feast while they watch the sailing dinghies at play. Ring the bell to get the ferryman’s atten- tion and he will take visitors across the water to Greenway. The village church boasts the Royal Coat of Arms of Charles II over its door.

Stoke Gabriel Stoke Gabriel is a little further upstream from Dittisham and situated on a beautiful creek. Catch sight of the famous 800-year-old yew tree in the churchyard, explore the old apple orchard or just wander through the winding streets. There are a few eateries around and visitors regularly moor up to enjoy a leisurely lunch by the water.

Cornworthy and Tuckenhay The most noteworthy building in the pretty agricultural village of Cornworthy is the Priory, now just a ruin. It was founded in the 13th century for nuns and was once the largest building in the parish. Cornworthy is on the River Dart, about half way between Dartmouth and Totnes, and just up the road is the hamlet of Tuckenhay which lies on Bow Creek. Two hundred years ago it was a bustling industrial hub with a mill producing hand-made paper. There’s the Maltsters Arms right on the creek – once run by the famous TV chef Keith Floyd - and The Watermans Arms just up the road.
