LOCAL BEACHES

Blackpool Sands Hailed a ‘must visit’ beach by national newspapers,

magazines and celebrities. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the golden crescent shingle beach is sheltered from the wind thanks to its forest backdrop of evergreens and pines. Blue Flag designated and just a few miles from Dartmouth by car (TQ6 0RG - there is ample parking) or a pleasant hour and a half walk along the South West Coast Path. During the warmer months, lifeguards are on hand to oversee a range of activities from kayaking and paddle boarding to good old fashioned swimming. All the gear is available for hire, including wetsuits. There are also sandpits, rock pools, a shop and the Venus Café (serving local organic produce and their famous burgers). Blackpool Sands hosts a number of events during the year including a music festival,

open air cinema nights and a triathlon. See their website for full details www.blackpoolsands.co.uk. Nearby, you can also visit Blackpool Gardens; an amazing, hidden sub-tropical paradise! These gardens were established in 1896 and have rare and colourful plants from South Africa, Chile, New Zealand and Australia - open to the public every day from 1st April to the end of September, weather permitting. Entry tickets are available from the car park attendant at the beach. Blackpool Sands and its beach café and shop are open every day and dogs are allowed from the end of October until mid- March.
