FESTIVALS & REGATTAS

Whether it’s dancing on the beach, stroking an award winning Devonshire bull, watching a military air display or eating local crab by the water, there’s an event to suit everyone in this part of Devon. There are more than 20 shows and festivals locally throughout 2020. Dartmouth Regatta is the jewel in the crown attracting thousands of people who come to watch the boat races, ooh and ahh at the fireworks and play at the fair. But there are all kinds of other events such as the weird and wonderful Blackawton Wormcharming Festival and Brixham’s pirate weekend, where it’s possible to meet a cut throat buccaneer around every corner!

Dartmouth Regatta: 22nd-29th August Dartmouth’s Royal Regatta is the biggest of the town’s many events.

It’s been running for 175 years and attracts thousands of visitors who come for the rowing races, fireworks, crabbing and pavement art competitions. There’s a great buzz during the week with music in the Royal Avenue Gardens and a street market taking over much of the town’s embankment. Local rowing crews train all year for the boat races. Cadets from the Royal Navy compete against teams from local pubs and restaurants in the barrel rolling and waiters/waitress races (always drawing a big crowd). There’s something for the whole fam- ily with a funfair, lots of food stalls and Proms in the Park. Children spend hours looking in shop windows to ‘spot the oddity’. (Whether it’s finding a tin of baked beans in an art gallery or spotting a care- fully hidden wooden spoon on display in a clothes shop - this game is somehow deeply satisfying whatever your age.) After the sunset awards ceremony on the Saturday night, everything culminates in a dramatic fireworks display. www.dartmouthregatta.co.uk
