ANTIQUES 055 Wartime memorabilia

• Posters from the time are really sought-after now – the ubiquitous “Keep Calm and Carry On” so famous and over-used now on everything from mugs to tea towels didn’t even make it on to posters in the war, but many other wonderful slogans did. From the famous “Dig for Victory” posters to the more obscure “Food is a Weapon” message, entreating you to eat up and not waste food. One of my favourites is the poster where a winking pig stands beside a large bin

and asks you for your kitchen waste. Reproductions of the posters are widely available but originals are getting scarce and therefore are more expensive. • Ration books are still fairly widely available and are affordable. Although perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing as posters or pottery, they are wonderful social history documents – and I like the typography too. A collection of ration books and clothing coupons recently sold on eBay for £100 but they sell for less individually. • Food packaging and tins are also still available – they sell for more if the contents are intact. Look out for tins of evaporated or dried milk, coffee, egg powder and sugar. The Imperial War Museum in London (iwm. org.uk) has a wonderful collection of Second World War food related items as well as ration books and posters. So if you’re intent on giving up something this January, spare a thought, as you say no to that tasty treat, for those who 80 years ago, had very few treats during 14 years of rationing!
