WEEKLY CHECKS WATER
Cars can go through a lot of
water, especially after long journeys. When the engine is cold, the water levels should be between the MIN and MAX marks.

LIGHTS
Reverse lights, brake lights, fog lights and indicators should all be checked weekly. Either put each light on and walk around the vehicle checking they’re all working or park the car facing a reflective surface such as a window.
FORTNIGHTLY CHECKS TYRES Tyres need to be cold when checked, so make sure the vehicle has been sat for a few hours. Your handbook will tell you what pressure tyres should be. Whilst checking pressure you should also check the tread for wear, cuts and bulges. Legally, tyres need to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, which you can check by placing a 20p coin into the tread. If the outer band of the coin is visible it’s a good indication that you should be visiting the garage and potentially purchasing new tyres.
ENGINE OIL
Using the dipstick found in the bonnet of the car, oil levels should
be between the min and max marks. Make sure you check after the car has been stationary for a while to ensure the oil is cool. You need to wipe the dipstick before placing it in the oil chamber to check. If you find you’re topping your car up more than usual, a trip to the garage may be needed.
SCREEN WASH
By law every car’s washer system must work. An easy thing to forget to check, but very annoying when you run out. Screen wash must prevent freezing and be strong enough to clear oily grime, but don’t forget to water it down if necessary.
MONTHLY CHECKS PAINTWORK
Have a walk around your car and look out for any signs of bubbling or rust. Getting these issues dealt with as soon as possible can be an easy way to stop any larger cost further down the line.
WINDSCREEN
Spotting chips in your windscreen and getting them repaired can stop them from getting any bigger and delays the potential price of a new windscreen. Chances are if you do get a chip, you’ll notice it pretty quickly, but doing a thorough check can keep problems at bay.
ANNUAL CHECKS WINDSCREEN WIPER
BLADES To prevent smearing on the windscreen, wipers should be changed yearly. Visibility is very important so it’s good practice to be changing wipers regularly before signs such as streaking can occur.
