A recipe for success
There really is something special about the Wortley Arms from the moment you step through the revolving door into the traditional welcome of this former coach house, which dates back to 1753.
Inside you will discover a huge fireplace where in the colder months the roaring fire greets you. The wood panels and solid stone walls add to the character and charm of the historic décor. Earlier this year, Jamie Ellis took over ownership of the pub; however, he is no stranger as he has worked at the Wortley Arms for 11 years. Jamie has since made a few subtle changes inside and introduced a new outdoor seating area where drinkers can relax, enjoy a drink or maybe ponder over the menu. The Wortley Arms is renowned for its good selection of Yorkshire ales which include Bradfield Brewery, Black Sheep and Wards as well as other guest ales. They also have an excellent selection of wines and a special gin menu.
But of course, it is the food that is the star of the show and the real draw for visitors.
‘‘The presentation and service throughout the evening had been exceptional from the kitchen to the front of house staff’’
The menu retains the winning combination of traditional favourites and high-end cuisine, with classics such as fish, burgers and steaks to the more elaborate and imaginative dishes devised around seasonal produce. For starters I opted for something a little different - butter roasted carrots, goats cheese cream, fennel and rocket salad, pickled apple and roasted pine nuts. The combination of the sweet carrots worked really well with the creamy goats cheese and the tangy apple gave bite to this dish.
My husband’s generous portion of confit chicken terrine was cleverly topped with leeks three ways - pureed, pickled and crispy - which gave a visual appeal. For mains I was tempted by the roasted cod loin served with Mediterranean vegetables, saffron pearl potatoes, smoked bacon and salsa verde. The quality of the cod loin was exceptional and the sauce was delicious, all topped with roasted vine tomatoes to give a lovely sweet twist to this dish. I could have guessed my husband’s choice of main before we set off; if ever there is lamb on the menu, it’s a winner for him. The lamb is locally sourced and it is great to see that the Wortley Arms supports the local famers. The cannon of lamb was infused with a herb crust and served pink which he said melted in his mouth. The pomme duchesse potatoes appeared crisp on the outside but when he cut into them were fluffy and soft. The peas were cooked in their pod to retain flavour and were accompanied with baby carrots, broccoli and turnip puree. It was difficult to decide which desserts to order, so we decided to share them. The creamy mango panna cotta with passionfruit, mango and mint salsa and lychee
granita gave a cool refreshing burst of tropical flavour. It was accompanied with a chocolate shortbread which had a subtle hint of chilli. For our other dessert we chose the blackberry compote served with a stout mousse and blackberry meringue. Both were delicious but if you have a more savoury palate the cheese board with homemade chutney may appeal. We ordered two coffees which came with scrumptious homemade flapjack and it’s those little touches that make all the difference. The presentation and service throughout the evening had been exceptional from the kitchen to
the front of house staff, who were friendly and attentive. Jamie has clearly set the bar high and we can’t wait to return for some more fine dining in the beautiful village of Wortley.
