New trend on the block
with Chris Moody of Moodyhair
Men’s hair seems to have been stuck in the same trend for what feels like years now.
Ever since the Peaky Blinders first stomped out in 2013, it’s been a constant stream of skin fades and hipster beards.
But the tides are slowly turning, giving way to length and waves and taking inspiration from the classic Young Leo style of the Nineties. Resurgent trends follow a strangely regular 20-30-year cycle and, true to form, this popular look is making a comeback as boys start to grow back their ‘curtained’ fringes. However, before you run to dig out the vests and baggy jeans, take note that the look has a 21st century
edge - the sides are a little longer and the overall style is more natural and less gelled.
The key points are now texture, movement, wave and yes, even curls. If you are looking be ahead of the mane game, then it’s time to start letting your hair grow out and enhance the looser look. For those blessed with a natural wave or curl, then it’s simply a case of adding some length and texture to the haircut. But if your hair happens to be as straight as a stair rod then it may be time to create some wave or curl by means of a - wait for it - soft perm! Yes, you heard it here first. A soft perm to create loose curls through the top is high on the agenda for many a young dude and here at Moodyhair we’re seeing a lot of young men growing the tops of their
hair and asking for curls. We’re not talking about the shaggy wash n’ wear mops of the ’70s footballer; this time round it’s more managed and way cooler. Fortunately, because of our 60-year history at Moodyhair, we have the experience, skills and the long memory to still carry out the perfect perm without leaving you with Justin Timberlake’s iconic bubble ‘fro. As always, we recommend that you visit your professional stylist or barber to talk about any new look, but especially check that the salon is capable and experienced in perming - not everyone is. Be sure to take pictures so you can both see what the expectation is.
If you’re not ready to give curls a whirl, or you already have naturally wavy hair, the next step is to grow out the length slightly. Keeping the
hairline short and tight, the sides and back are going to grow out into what we stylists call a wedged graduation. The top and front will get longer but be more texturised using freehand cutting to loosen the movement in the hair. Bin the wet-look gels and the super sleek pomades; instead, style using matt clays, grooming cremes and soft waxes, adding texture and movement without setting the hair in place. Redken’s Rough Paste and Outshine (available in salon £15.50) are perfect for shiny or matt styling. Lee Stafford Messed Up Putty will hold shape and texture together (Boots £6.99) Fish Texturising Creme (£5.99 Superdrug) is a glossy creme that defines and shapes.
Have fun and crank up the ’90’s remix!
