HEALTH & BEAUTY

Autumn means awareness

This autumn is all about awareness with many national health campaigns happening throughout September and October.

Whether you choose to bake it, fake it or eat it, remember to look out for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 27th to help raise money for people living with cancer.

While not the only cause, smoking is responsible for 85 percent of lung cancers; signs and symptoms include:

• A cough that doesn’t go away after three weeks • A long-standing cough that gets worse • Persistent chest infections • Coughing up blood

Stoptober

Quitting smoking is never easy, especially without support. But evidence has shown that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times as likely to quit for good. Plus, you’ll save money, protect your family from second-hand smoke and improve your own health straight away.

• An ache or pain when breathing or coughing • Persistent breathlessness • Persistent tiredness or lack of energy • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

Stoptober supports those looking to go smoke-free through social media and apps, local stop smoking services or just the togetherness that knowing others are trying to quit at the same time. Since launching in 2012, over one million people have attempted to quit so why not join them on October 1st.

Wear It Pink

This worldwide campaign takes place on October 18th as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many of ways to get involved, including wearing pink, fundraising or simply helping to make people aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Breast cancer screening (mammograms) is available from age 50; however, breast cancer can affect all ages and everyone should self-check. The signs and symptoms of breast cancer are:

• A lump or area of thickened tissue in either breast that was not there before. Most breast lumps (90 percent) aren’t cancerous, but it’s always best to have them checked by your doctor

• A change in the size or shape of one or both breasts

• Bloodstained discharge from either of your nipples

• A lump or swelling in either of your armpits • Dimpling on the skin of your breasts • A rash on or around your nipple • A change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast If you are at all worried that you are display any of the signs and symptoms, or need help to quit smoking, contact your GP.
