Rotherham Ring Route

Firbeck to Maltby With Rotherham Metro Ramblers

This 11 mile circular route of the eastern Rotherham boundary takes in historic delights in Firbeck, Thurcroft, Brookhouse and Maltby. The first section from Firbeck to Maltby is 4 miles. Start: Firbeck Church Postcode: S81 8JY

Start at Firbeck Church. Take the footpath to the left of the Church, cross the field until it meets a path coming from the right. You will see a monument commemorating RAF Firbeck and the ground crews who served there from 1940 to 1948. Carry straight on the path which makes a sharp bend to the left.

Continue along then turn right at the hedge. Shortly after the tree, bear left across the field. Follow the path diagonally across 3 fields until it joins a track.

Continue ahead, keeping left at the junction.

Keep left again at the hedge which splits the track. At the next field boundary by the trees, turn right through the stile next to the gate. Follow the path along the right of the hedge and bear to the left of Stone Farm. After the farm, turn left onto the farm track. Continue to the minor road and turn sharp right down the hill.

Just before the minor road meets the A634, take the left footpath. Follow the path to the historic ruins of Roche Abbey, founded by Cistercian Monks in 1147. Keeping the ruins on your left, continue past the information centre and the old gate house. Carry on along the track and through the gate. Keep straight ahead along the path on the valley bottom to the minor road. Cross the road

(Gypsy Lane) and follow the well-defined path through the woodland. At the fork, bear right up the hill and bear left at the junction of paths. At the next fork, bear left, shortly after the path turns right under a railway bridge. Keep on the wooded path and stay straight on where it crosses a rough road.

Continue to a gate, bear left across 2 fields heading towards St Bartholomew’s Church. Extensively rebuilt in 1859, notice the ancient West Tower with herringbone limestone pattern, and its 14th century lychgate. Keep on the path through the woodland with the stream on the left. Go through the gate by the houses and shortly after turn right up some stone steps and through the church yard. Carry on under the church gate and up Church Lane. Cross the road and climb the stairs to Maltby Cross at the junction of the A634 and A631.
