Corfe Mullen Community Speedwatch Making Corfe Mullen safer
At this time of year, holidays reduce the number of volunteers available so we cannot run as many sessions as we’d like – but we’re still active. Death and injury from road traffic accidents is being reduced in Dorset, against the national trend. CSW has helped. Any amount of volunteering effort, however small, makes a difference.
Since Corfe Mullen CSW started in 2015, Blandford Road between Rectory Avenue and Windgreen, past Lockyer’s School, has been the speeding blackspot, with consistently higher percentages of speeders than elsewhere in the village. We have been targeting that road even though the traffic volumes are relatively low. It is really good news that we are not hearing complaints from residents about speeding on that road – no vehicles were speeding last time we were speedwatching there.
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. Speeding on Wimborne Road was the worst we have ever seen last time we were there. The problem is too serious for a team of volunteers to address effectively, so we have referred it to Dorset Road Safe for enforcement.
Camera Vans teams, No Excuses Officers, Community Speedwatch and other parts of Dorset Road Safe share information and, to some extent, pool resources. CSW volunteers may accompany individual Dorset Road Safe officers on enforcement operations to free up another officer. Officers with Trucam equipment may join CSW sessions and use that equipment instead of CSW equipment to record speeding offences, resulting in penalty notices rather than polite advisory letters. When speeding drivers see Community Speedwatch notices and/or a team, one of the people in a hi-vis jacket might be a police officer with Trucam equipment for enforcement. Information we provide is also used to deploy camera vans. We are expecting one or more of these enforcement measures to address the speeding problem in Wimborne Road.
We are an enthusiastic and committed group and we always welcome new volunteers. If you can spare a few hours a month to make our village safer, please email Susan Jefferies (susan@jsjj.
me.uk) or Laurie Powell (grief_express@hotmail. com) to volunteer.
