Church News

It seems that even if we want to, we cannot escape change. Of course not all change is bad although it’s bad change that most often makes the news.

One prominent writer argues that there is lots of good change happening across the world – the number of people lifted out of poverty in the last 20 years in places like China for example – but it happens on such a slow scale it never makes the news and so we get an unduly distorted picture of events. Having said this, many argue that the mini heat wave we enjoyed in July is also part of the slow-change event of climate change which is having a damaging effect across the world.

As a new academic year gets underway many young people will be undergoing change. It may simply be the change of a classroom teacher or the bigger step of starting school for the fi rst time or leaving home to start university or a job. For many it’s not change per se that is the problem but the uncertainty that goes with it, the element of the unknown that can make us anxious or fearful; Brexit is an obvious example.

People can often look to the Church to be an unchanging place but of course the Church has changed too, as it always has, and will go on changing in response to a society and wider context which

changes. The one constant is God, who the Bible

describes as Faithful One and Unchanging One.

And one consistent and unchanging theme Christians believe in is nurturing an attitude of thankfulness for all that is good, which is why we continue to celebrate harvest and the abundance of good things we enjoy, grown locally and around the world. Our harvest family service will be on 22nd September at 10am. And the following week on 29th September at 10am we will learn more about how the diocese is supporting South Sudan with its medical link.

And here is another unchanging ‘old favourite’ of good family fun that many still love, even though others today have never heard of it: a Beetle Drive! All are welcome to join in on Saturday 28th September, 7pm at St Nicholas. Tickets are £10, including a fi sh and chip supper (family ticket available £25).
