Dorset Council Report

I have always been a keen advocate of recycling. Are you? Do you hate wasting things?

So do I, and that is why I am part of a group of volunteers who run the ‘Win-on-Waste’ sessions at Corfe Mullen Library, from 10.30-11.30am on the second Saturday of every month. Village residents are able to donate household items that would usually just be thrown away. These include milk bottle tops, biscuit wrappers, used ink cartridges, bras, crisp packets, tinfoil, toothpaste tubes, pens, beauty products, etc. The complete list (pg8) actually features over 24 different things.

These Saturday sessions are becoming increasingly popular. When I fi rst became involved with Win-on-Waste I used to sit alongside Susan Jeffries, the local team organiser, at a small table in the middle of the library collecting donated items at a leisurely pace whilst sipping a hot cup of coffee. Usually about 20 or 30 people would regularly donate recyclable items. Several would also stop for a friendly chat.

As the popularity of recycling increased in 2018, so did the number of people donating to the cause. During 2019 Win-on-Waste moved into

a room just off the main library area in order to accommodate the increasing number of people with donations. In August 2019 well over 100 people visited the library session to donate recyclable items to Win-on-Waste. This was a record which I hope will be broken in September!

Win On-Waste sessions are run by Ideas2Action, a small charity that runs community recycling projects across Bournemouth and Poole. They in turn support other local charities including ‘Gift of Sight’, ‘Parkinson’s UK Poole’, ‘Ladybird Unit, Poole Hospital’ and ‘Childhood Brain Tumour Research’. Why not donate your recyclable items to a really good cause?

(Ps – my thanks to Beth for her help in ensuring the August session went as planned. Thanks!)

Best regards
