Dorset Council Report

As the school summer holidays come to an end, I hope you’ve had an enjoyable summer, even when the weather has been traditionally ‘British’ and kept us on our toes!

I’d like to thank all the volunteers who have been out and about, helping with the monthly Community Litter Picks that I organise. Thanks also to this publication for continuing to help notify residents of the upcoming Pick (pg56). Much of the equipment we use comes from the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) and there has been a recent drive by DWP to fi ght fl y-tipping. Signs have gone up in various places around the county that we know are frequently used for illegally dumping waste. They’re part of the enforcement activities, that also include investigations, fi nes and prosecutions. Find out how you can help us in the fi ght against fl y-tipping at: http://socsi.in/BbDUo

A great way to be kept informed of DWP services is to subscribe to their e-newsletter. They email important information about their services, including changes to collections and how they’re fi ghting

CRUMBS TRAINEE EXCELS

AT NEW COMMUNITY CAFE Charity-run community café in Poole, Colin’s Nest, is having a positive impact on the lives of adults with special life challenges by helping them gain valuable work experience in the hospitality sector.

Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop on Birds Hill is run by local charity The Crumbs Project, which provides catering training for adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues, stabilised addictions and brain injuries. The coffee shop funded by Luxury Care and Lloyds Community Foundation aims to offer trainees an opportunity to put their culinary skills into practice within a supportive environment.

Crumbs trainee Raymond has been attending work experience at Colin’s Nest since the coffee shop fi rst opened in March. Raymond originally joined the Project as part of his recovery from mental illness and to learn to live independently.

Commenting on his experience, Raymond said: “I enjoy working at Colin’s Nest and serving all

Now, as the children in our village prepare to head back to school or start for the fi rst time, I wish them all well for the new term. Our village schools are a great asset to us and I know, through my day job, how popular Corfe Mullen is for those looking at school catchment areas. With impressive Ofsted reports, they are a real credit to us.

Regards for now,

our new customers. The Crumbs Project has helped me to learn lots of new things and I hope that this will help me get a paid job in the future.”

Describing the impact the community cafe is having on Crumbs trainees, Training Manager, Ursula Boardman said: “Colin’s Nest is a perfect stepping stone for trainees who are coming to the end of their learning, but are still not quite ready to seek alternative employment. Here, they can continue to build their confi dence and knowledge within a supportive environment. For trainees like Raymond, this is having a positive impact in preparing him for the world of work.”

Colin’s Nest Coffee Shop can be found at 25 Birds Hill Road, Poole, BH25 2QJ and is open from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, serving a variety of cakes, sandwiches and beverages.
