Veterinary Surgeons celebrates

Diamond Anniversary R

ossdales Veterinary Surgeons, one of the largest independent equine veterinary practices in Europe, is celebrating 60 years of service to its clients.

Rossdales was established in Newmarket in 1959

by Peter Rossdale. His vision was for an equine veterinary practice based on scientific principles, evidence-based medicine, and a personalised service to his clients and their horses. 60 years on, those principles and qualities are still integral to the ethos of the practice as it celebrates its Diamond Anniversary. Today, Rossdales has 50 veterinary surgeons,

more than 100 support staff and an international reputation for providing world class ambulatory, referral and laboratory services. The veterinary team is led by RCVS, European and American recognised veterinary specialists. The practice operates from four sites in Newmarket, Exning, Hertfordshire and Lambourn. Rossdales’ Managing Partner Mike Shepherd said:

“We are very proud to be celebrating our Diamond Anniversary. The practice has grown enormously over the years and our commitment to continually invest in our facilities and in new technologies has enabled us to recruit some of the best clinicians in the world. They in turn are supported by excellent teams of technicians, yard and office staff.” Mike continued: “Our stud and racing veterinary

The specialist institution – the largest equine educational establishment in the world – has installed a £44,000 Racewood MK10 Racing Simulator to further enhance its exceptional range of world-class facilities, ahead of next week’s showcase race meeting. teams offer one of the largest Thoroughbred ambulatory services in Europe from our practice at Beaufort Cottage Stables in the centre of Newmarket – the original site for the practice and for Rossdales Laboratories, the respected diagnostic laboratory service which was established more than 50 years ago. It is also the base for our dedicated team of ambulatory vets who serve a large number of sport and leisure horse clients throughout the Eastern region – this is an area of our practice that continues to expand.” The internationally-renowned Rossdales Equine Hospital and Diagnostic

Centre is situated in nearby Exning and sees more than 3000 horses annually from across the UK for diagnostic, medical, surgical and reproductive referrals. Mike explained: “Our specialist teams at the hospital and diagnostic centre see horses from all disciplines and breeds - from elite performance horses, to heavy horses, riding ponies, miniature breeds and donkeys - and every one of our equine patients receives the same high standard of care.” Rossdales Equine Hospital and Diagnostic Centre has been designated

'Outstanding' in four RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS) awards. Rossdales’ ambulatory service in Newmarket has achieved the same 'Outstanding' status, making Rossdales the second practice in the UK to have achieved all five RCVS PSS awards. In recent years Rossdales has further expanded its services by opening

two branch practices, the first in Hertfordshire in 2012 and the second in Lambourn at the beginning of 2017. Both practices have dedicated veterinary teams who provide comprehensive ambulatory services to their clients. Horse owners, trainers and stud farms served by these practices also benefit from the specialist expertise and facilities available across the wider practice, when required.

analyse in detail various aspects of a rider’s performance in real time, to help develop technique and race strategy. The simulator includes soſtware that enables riders to gain

experience ‘riding’ around simulated versions of world-famous racetracks. The technology will support Hartpury’s two horseracing courses

– BSc (Hons) Racehorse Performance and Rehabilitation and BA (Hons) International Horseracing Business – as well as enabling research into rider performance by Hartpury staff and students. The simulator increases an already extensive range of hi-tech equipment at the Equine Centre, including a £90,000 Racewood Eventing simulator currently used by students, local riding groups and elite riders recovering from injury. The MK10’s arrival also follows the official opening of Hartpury’s new £8.8 million Sports Academy by Olympic rowing champion Dame Katherine Grainger, featuring equipment such as an Alter G anti-gravity treadmill. Associate Professor Kathryn Nankervis, Manager of the Margaret

Giffen Centre for Rider Performance, said: “The arrival of the Mark 10 allows us to expand our support for riders to include those involved in Flat and jump racing. “We hope the combination of the MK10 and the specialist

facilities and expertise within our Sports Academy will help many aspiring jockeys improve their fitness and technique whilst also supporting jockeys recovering from injury. “Multiple sensors provide instant feedback about a rider’s balance, fitness and heart rate, as well as how effectively they’re riding in relation to the stride pattern of the horse.” In addition to the simulators, the equine facilities at Hartpury include an indoor championship arena, outdoor and indoor arenas, cross-country courses and livery for 230 horses. Students can choose from a range of diplomas and degrees

related to equine studies, as well training as competitive riders alongside their studies. www.hartpury.ac.uk/college/course-areas/equine/
