loud or in your head. That will help you to concentrate on the canter rhythm. I know of some people that hum tunes in a rhythm to help maintain it in the ring. You can still buy Dad’s books on our website. www.timstockdale.com/shop

I have just returned from a trip to Young Rider European Championships at Zuidwolde in the Netherlands. It wasn’t to be our time this year but Don Diego De Plata was fantastic and jumped really well. He was so unlucky to have a fence off the first day and two down in the second round of the Nations Cup. I still have two years in Young riders, so I hope that I will get another chance to go. It was a great experience and one which has taught me a lot and I hope if I get senior selection in the future, I will have learnt from this experience and be even more prepared.

jumps flat, lands on the forehand, only to be pulled back again to repeat the same thing to the next fence.

You also see riders taking extra strides down distances instead of keeping level, most courses up to intermediate should have level distances between the jumps. As long as you teach your horse to stay level in its canter, each jump should be like you and I crossing the road and stepping up a kerb. You don’t stop halfway across the road, and rush at it to make sure you step up in the right place.

So very simply put 4 planks or poles down at 3.6m intervals and canter over them until you feel confident that your horse is staying in the same rhythm. When you feel happy with that you can put a small jump at the end.

Using the planks helps you train or re-train a rhythmical approach to a single fence. You can then start to remove the planks, starting with the one closest to the jump. If it helps count the strides out

We have the British National Showjumping Championships in August and I am lucky enough to be the Ambassador for the show, it was a job that Dad was immensely proud of. I am really looking forward to the show and hope I have some good results to report next time.
