Name: Drs Oliver and Alison Denton
Company: Daleswood Health
Job Title: Director and general practitioners
What does your company do? Daleswood Health is what we always hoped a doctors health centre would be - personal, modern, accessible and reliable. Our aim is to provide a one-stop health centre where you see a doctor who knows you and that works alongside specialist and therapists to help you get the most from your health.
How did it all start? Having worked in the NHS for 20 years, we became increasingly concerned that our patients were struggling to get the service they need, care was fragmented and the ‘family doctor’ had been lost. We knew there was a better way.
What’s been your greatest achievement so far? We have a mixture of ad-hoc and registered patients but growing the number of healthcare plan patients that truly benefit from having a doctor they can access whenever they need and allow us to really get help them is so rewarding.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Leaving the NHS was a huge risk - one we knew we had to do but leaving the safety and stability of the job was difficult. So far, the rewards in terms of job satisfaction have been worth it, knowing the difference in the service we can now offer.
What keeps you awake at night? As a start-up business with very few local examples, we need to improve awareness of our service. We have modest aspirations but need to increase our patient base to achieve our end goal of helping the local community and business to get the most from their health.
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Public awareness of our service is our greatest challenge. Having spent our entire adult life in medicine we don’t have the experience to sell our business and more experience in marketing would have made a difference.
What has surprised you most in your job? The gratitude and thanks we get from our patients and the personal reward from knowing you have made is a difference is amazing.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? We are where we are because of the people we started out in business with, know your team and build it around your vision.
What exciting projects is your business working on? Collaborating and working in partnership with businesses that share our values of improving health and providing the highest quality of care and attention.
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? Over the past few years, there has been a change in the way businesses see health and the importance it has. The Chamber is an essential resource, being a leader in insight and networking. Joining the Chamber to gain from their knowledge and experience should be the first step for any business but being able to support the increasing focus on health from within the Chamber is our hope.
