Chamber Patrons Chamber Patrons Greater Birmingham Chambers’ leading supporters Show support

for Reservists Employers across the West Midlands are being urged to support Reservists working in their organisations. The West Midland Reserve

Forces & Cadets Association and employers across the region will be using Reserves Day on 26 June to highlight the contribution Reservists make to the armed forces. Many Reservists, when not called on by the army, work in civilian organisations in ordinary jobs. WM RFCA are hoping those

employers, and signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, which ensures those serving in the Armed Forces are treated fairly, will show their support for Reservists currently working in their organisations. Debra Barton, regional

employer engagement director at WMRFCA, said: “Reserves Day is a fantastic opportunity for the nation to show their support for our Reservists and celebrate the contribution they make to our Armed Forces. “It is a great opportunity to

show your support to our Armed Forces, and thank them for everything that they do.”

Andrew Jones, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, visited Birmingham to see how works are progressing at the region’s main HS2 sites. The Curzon Street site in Birmingham city centre is being readied for construction of a new station, with 20,000 tonnes of concrete broken up and crushed so it can be reused. Two buildings are being demolished and this will yield around 30,000 tonnes of material, with works being undertaken by demolitions firm DSM.

‘Fantastic jobs and opportunities HS2 is providing people across the country’

In Washwood Heath, Midlands

firm Total Reclaims Demolition has started work on HS2’s new train maintenance depot. The old site of the Alstom Rail

Depot is 110,282 square metres – the size of 15 football pitches – and will yield 412,000 tonnes of material that will be recycled. With 50,000 hours of labour

required to clear the site, the team is now 75 per cent of the way through the programme.

Chamber patron LMJV, a joint

venture of Laing O’Rourke and J Murphy & Sons Ltd, have been carrying out enabling works to pave the way for the high-speed rail line. Work over an 80km trace across

the West Midlands has included route clearance and ecological habitat creation. Fifteen miles further afield, in

Solihull, vegetation clearance works and trenching have been carried out at the triangular-shaped site which will be home to the Birmingham Interchange station. Mr Jones said: “The scale of works happening in Birmingham

show the huge progress being made on HS2. They also show first- hand the fantastic jobs and opportunities HS2 is providing people across the country. I cannot wait to see the results of further construction, and for this vital railway become a reality.” Paul Faulkner, chief executive of

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce said: “HS2 is already playing a huge part of the Midlands’ success story. Hundreds of businesses are already supporting the project, and there are more opportunities for firms across the region as the programme progresses.”
