Coach firm buys greener vehicles

Johnsons Coach and Bus Travel has added four new coaches to its fleet in a bid meet air quality and emissions standards. The Henley-in-Arden firm’s

new coaches are equipped with Euro 6 engines, which meet the latest European Commission regulations on harmful exhaust gases. Compared with the previous

Euro 5 emissions standard, which focused on carbon dioxide emissions, Euro 6 is targeting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Euro 6 engines are also designed to reduce sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and diesel particulate matter emissions, as well as CO2. Two of the coaches are

Scania Interlink Finesse 12.8m two axle vehicles, built to the company’s 49-seat Club Class configuration and will be used on Johnsons’ extensive range of holidays and day excursions. The other Scania is a 14-

metre vehicle with 63 seats and a toilet. This is an addition to a new 37-seater Yutong TC9 midi-coach. Both will be used on private

hires for customers in the corporate, leisure and education sectors. John Johnson, commercial

director of Johnsons Coach Travel, said: “We are investing heavily in vehicles with the latest state-of-the-art engine technology, which have amazingly low emissions, compared to older vehicles. “We now have 18 ‘Euro 6’

coaches and buses and more investment is already being planned for next year. “With Ultra Low Emissions

Zone (ULEZ) already in place in London and Clean Air Zones (CAZ) being implemented in other cities very soon, we are well placed to meet the needs of our customers and these new regulations.”

One million passengers pass through automated bag drop

More than one million passengers have now used Birmingham Airport’s automated self-service bag drop. Designed to reduce passenger

check-in times, the self-service bag drop allows passengers to print bag tags and boarding passes and insert their bag into the baggage system using a simple, customer- friendly user interface. The service has decreased queue

times, while freeing up staff to help passengers who need assistance elsewhere.

Chris Wilson, head of capacity

and performance at Birmingham Airport said: “We are always looking into ways make our passengers’ journeys as seamless as possible. “This is something which is not

only important from the very moment a passenger enters our terminal doors, but also to the very moment they leave. “This is especially significant as

passengers place their bag on the scales. They are then prompted to scan their boarding pass and instructions on how to check in their bags is displayed.

Each bag tag will have any details

of connecting flights, priority or heavy bag information automatically printed, along with a receipt at the end of the transaction. The airport has 61 automated
