Transforming lives S

By Jayne Runacres, Communications Manager at Shaw Trust and Julia Mann-Tighe, Senior Business Support Administrator at Fostering to Inspire

haw Trust is a charity helping to transform the lives of young people and adults across the UK and internationally. Our specialist services help people

gain an education, enter work, develop their career, improve their wellbeing or rebuild their lives. As a charity we add value to every service we deliver by investing back into the people and communities we support. Comprising Shaw Trust, Prospects, Ixion and Shaw

Education Trust, we use our 75 years’ combined experience to support people to develop their potential. By joining together we are working to reach one goal: to help transform the lives of one million young people and adults each year. One of the ways Shaw Trust transforms

‘We use our 75

lives is through its social enterprises which deliver a range of horticultural and manufacturing services across the UK. Our six social enterprises also help to create brighter futures in the communities where we work by offering local people a range of work experience and employment opportunities. Shaw Trust Industries, in Doncaster, manufactures products that include plastic protective edging, injection moulding and electromagnetic powder coating. This international enterprise can tailor products to meet the needs of your business.

placements on behalf of local authorities. Our experience of working with the most vulnerable young people in society has given us a unique insight into the needs of children and particularly the importance of a nurturing, safe and supportive family home. We work very closely with our foster carers to ensure

they provide an environment that acts as an ‘extended family’ around the fostering home and the child. We recognise the importance of support for a fostering family and employ a team approach in everything we do. Our carers are never left to ‘go it alone’. We provide training opportunities for our foster carers to build their skills and knowledge to the long- term benefit of our fostered children. Nina, one of our foster carers, said:

“My experience with fostering a child has been both challenging and rewarding. I had decided a long time ago that fostering was what I wanted to do after working in a male prison for 15 years with men who had had a difficult childhood from being in the care system

Care and Support We support vulnerable children, young people and adults, keeping them safe and improving their life chances. Our approach is not just to help people to tackle the issues

and circumstances they face but to raise their aspirations and expectations and help them plan a better life. Working flexibly and tailoring our support around the

needs of the individual, and their family our focus is on helping them to overcome the challenges they face and always to achieve the best outcome possible.

Our care and support services: • Gloucestershire Youth Support Service • Homes2Inspire • Fostering to Inspire • Calderdale Leaving Care Services

Fostering to Inspire Based in Wakefield, Yorkshire, Fostering to Inspire, Prospects’ independent fostering agency, provides foster

and dysfunctional homes, they encouraged me to take on the role. When I first looked into fostering I discovered there are so many services it became overwhelming. However I spoke to a lovely lady who was very enthusiastic and positive about the agency so I decided I would go with Fostering to Inspire. “I wanted to make a difference to a child’s life, in a positive

way. I wanted to help a child fulfil their own potential, feel safe, learn independence and most importantly feel worthy.”

Homes2Inspire Homes2Inspire provide, care, support and education programmes to young people across the country. We specialise in working with children up to the age of 18 that may also require enhanced levels of care. Our staff not only aim to meet the development needs of

young people but, through the use of individual assessment, support, guidance and opportunities they can begin to explore and address their individual needs improving outcomes, with a comprehensive care plan that helps support them to achieve their aspirations. Our homes are located in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire,

Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire and Worcestershire, where the business works closely with local authorities.
