A transport strategy that reduces travel time,

improves access to transport through better connectivity between our towns and cities, attracts more users and through increased usage and higher efficiency leads to lower fares is a key enabler to increasing economic productivity. We have also seen the appointment of the

region’s first Active Travel Commissioner, Dame Sarah Storey. Dame Sarah is the most successful female Paralympian and is truly passionate about active travel – not just for elite athletes, but for all of us. We live in one of the most centrally governed

economies in the world. My experience of working internationally and living in other

countries, as well as operating in one of the world’s biggest sectors on a global scale, has convinced me that local decision-making and discretion on how and where investments should be prioritised always leads to higher returns. There is a strong case to be made for further

devolved power to the north that I believe the LEPs can make more strongly on a Northern Powerhouse platform through showcasing its collaboration, focusing on key enablers to economic growth that are common to all and identifying the policy changes that will accelerate the development of our businesses. This will significantly improve the skill set of our population.
