Business students excel during Executive Company Project

Every business leader has great ideas that never get off the ground because they do not have the time or resources to research it. At Leicester CasCastle Business School (LCBS), part of De Montfort University Leicester, there’s an answer to this all-too-common business challenge – the Executive Company Project (ECP). Businesses submit a project brief

detailing a company research task for post-graduate students, who spend three months focused on this specific brief. The ECP is mutually beneficial in providing invaluable industry experience for the student, and the business gets free research, insights and evaluation into their business challenge. Increasing numbers of

companies are bringing their projects to LCBS since the innovative programme was launched and more than 200 students have been placed with companies since June last year. LCBS has three groups of

students on ECPs each year in

February, June and October and some 90 students will take part in the next round of ECPs, due to begin in June. The deadline for applications to host ECP students in June is 12 April. LCBS Head of Postgraduate

Professional Development Leena Dattani-Demirci said: “The ECP has captured the imagination of many companies, which have taken the opportunity to give a focused, research project to our postgraduates who can devote their time and apply the latest business skills over three months. The students are able to complete this project as an alternative to the traditional dissertation. “It gives them practical

experience and the opportunity to develop skills, while the business benefits from the student’s innovative insights.” ECPs can be carried out

remotely or at the host company premises and involve a variety of organisations and projects. Two success stories include:

Voluntary Action Leicestershire Voluntary Action Leicestershire (VAL) is a charity that has been part of the voluntary and community sector in the city and county for more than 50 years. MSc Strategic and Digital

Marketing student Itunu Para- Mallam was asked to assess the company’s marketing and promotional activity. She arranged meetings with

stakeholders, completed analysis reports and showed the company how its marketing strategy was having an impact in the sector. ECP host, Kevin Allen-Khimani,

Sector Support Manager, said: “We really enjoyed working with Itunu. Talking things through with her has reaffirmed our thinking concerning how we take our marketing and communication forward.”

Leicester City Council The city council is keen to attract more inward investment in the area. It set two MBA Global students,

Awin Latif and Lakshmi Revanasiddaiah, the task to conduct interviews and to use information from these to compile case studies of businesses already operating in Leicester and Leicestershire. The students also researched

how a strategy can be built to attract more investment and investors to the area. Place Marketing Manager Brian

Lisowy said: “I would highly recommend the experience to another organisation. The students bring a different perspective and I have found the students add value to the project itself.”
