CHAMBER NEWS Industry peer support group is launched

The Chamber is supporting the launch of an innovative, free pilot programme to help male and female construction workers to improve their mental and physical health. Construction workers, including

those who are self-employed, in and around the Nottingham area, will be able to access tailored peer support. Free confidential support is

available for people working in the sector to improve the wellbeing of workers through sport, advice from people who have overcome mental and physical health barriers and priority access to medical support such as physiotherapists. The programme is being co-

facilitated by Self Help UK and Notts County Football In The Community and is delivered by Nottinghamshire City Council, with funding via the Work and Health Unit, which is a joint partnership of the Department for Health and Social Care and the Department for Work and Pensions. A launch event, where more

information was available to construction industry employers and workers, took place last month. Each individual programme

delivery will be over a 12-week period.

The event explained and

discussed the programme outline and the range of workshops and/or physical activity sessions. Participants on the programme will also have an individualised assessment of need and will frame their own action plan - including their desired outcomes from the programme. Individuals attending this event

were given time to get to know each other - an important part of the session was looking at the theory and practice of self-help and how this is linked to peer support. The role of peer support mentors -

and plans for the recruitment and training of these – were all discussed. The session also included an introduction to the Big

White Wall resource and to the potential for using social media in the practice of effective peer support.

WANT TO KNOW MORE? There will be several groups held during 2019, with further groups planned to start on 13 May, 12 August and 11 November 2019. The sessions will be offered at different locations at a variety of

times to suit different groups. All venues will be within Nottingham. Participants can self-refer to the project or be referred by their

employer with consent. If you are an employer or construction worker and are interested in this initiative and want more information, please contact Glenda Casteloes on 0115 876 2931 (during office hours) or email cips@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
