Historic firm merges with Canadian giants


Commercial property firm GVA – who have an office in Birmingham’s Brindleyplace – have been taken over by fast-growing Canadian business Avison Young. The two companies will combine under the Avison


Young name with immediate effect. GVA employs more than 400 people in Birmingham. Carl Potter, who will remain head of the Midlands’ regional office, said: “GVA has had strong roots in Birmingham for over 200 years and the news that we will be returning to a partnership model and the culture which that entails has been received with unanimous positivity from the plus 400 people who work out of this office. “We envisage that this will very much be a case of


business as usual on a day-to-day basis for our clients, but with the added advantage of a great, invigorating corporate culture and a wealth of new experience through our worldwide colleagues. “This will add a global perspective which will,


moving forward, be instrumental in ensuring that the advice that we provide sets us apart. This is a truly pivotal moment in our evolution and a great springboard into the future.” As a result of the merger, Avison Young is set to


increase its revenue to 25 times its 2008 level to approximately $1bn. The Toronto-headquartered company now has


more than 5,000 real estate professionals in 120 offices in 20 countries.

Dance school acquires studio


A Solihull dance school has bought the studio it has rented for the last five years after securing a commercial mortgage from HSBC UK. Aura Dance Studio, a ballroom

now teaches some 500 students a week in its ballroom, Latin and fitness classes. Martin Cutler said: “We’ve


developed a high standard of teaching at Aura and are thrilled that HSBC UK has backed the business. Our HSBC UK relationship manager Dominic Smith supported us throughout the application process and demonstrated his clear understanding of our business aims.”
