STEM skills in the spotlight at business expo

A business expo focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sectors has been hailed a success. More than 300 delegates and 50 exhibitors attended the STEM Expo,

organised by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in conjunction with hosts Millennium Point. Representatives from energy, pharmaceutical, education, life sciences,

forensic data, software development and diagnostic testing firms were in attendance. The event formed part of a wider partnership between the GBCC and Millennium Point to tackle a critical skills shortage in the STEM sector. Millennium Point funded 50 free Chamber start-up memberships for

STEM businesses who have been trading for less than 12 months. GBCC chief executive Paul Faulkner said: “It has been fantastic to work

with Millennium Point on the STEM Expo, which was an informative and engaging event for both exhibitors and delegates. “It was really important to organise this Expo, as the STEM sector is

suffering from a shortage of skilled workers, costing the sector billions in recruitment, temporary staffing and extra training. “The shortage and cost for these businesses impacts employers, society

and the economy, and we have to be able to home-grow our own talent. “Business has a critically important role to play, and I hope that more STEM focused events, like this Expo, can happen in the future.”
