Around Kingswear BY MIKE TREVORROW

Free Range Women No, not something you’d find half

a dozen to a box, but a group of Kingswear women who like to go out together to have a good time, visit a concert, eat a meal, that sort of thing. Their last sortie was to The Flavel to watch the final instalment of Bake-Off, apparently a TV pro- gramme about cooking puddings, or so I am told. Our ladies went noshing at

Kendricks and then decanted in to The Flavel to eat puddings, drink prosecco and watch the big, big tel- ly. A good time was had by all even though some people ate too much pudding. No names or I’m in dead trouble! The production was a Live Showing at the Flavel, something which I must admit I really enjoy. If you haven’t seen any of the live showings from top flight theatres and concert halls then all I can say is – you’re missing out on a real treat.

Family Fun Day I am delighted to announce that

Kingswear Family Fun Day is back next year, with a vengeance. 2018 was a rest year for the organisers and the sponsors but they’re back, alive and kicking in 2019 with many of the usual favourite things plus some new stuff, which I have to

keep secret. So all you lovely classic and vintage car owners get your polishing rags out and book your spot on the field SUNDAY, JUNE 23rd. As for everyone else please put the date in your diaries and keep the day free to come along to have some fun, drink something nice, eat something good and gen- erally make merry. I will give more details nearer the time.

Practical Matters By the time you read this, hopefully,

some improvements will have taken place in the village, initiated by the parish council. if these have not hap- pened yet they will soon take place, we are assured: replacement of the bollards in Fore St and re-surfacing of Higher Contour Rd, Church Hill and Ridley Hill. There will also be some re-painting of road surface signs which have become worn.

Bag-Lady Thankyou Last month I asked if anyone had

any old duvet covers which they no longer used for them to donate the covers to my wife Jan to make in to fabric bags – to help save using the dreaded single-use plastic. One kind lady in Paignton saw the article and gave some covers which have

now been donated, in bag form, to Cancer Research in Dartmouth in or- der to cut down their use of plastic. However, I can’t help feeling that there may be more unused covers out there which could be doing a good charitable job. Each big cover makes about 24 really good strong bags which can be used again and again. All is done without cost to anyone, of course. So if you want to do your little

bit to save some plastic, instead of just wringing your hands in despair, please call Jan on 01803 752928 to let her know of a cover and she, or I, will be happy to come along to collect it. Many thanks.

El Posho Village Hall You may well have seen tradesmen

going in to the village halls in recent days and ‘things going on’ – this is because a great deal of work has gone on to improve and repair the hall and bring it up to scratch. (can’t remember the last time I scratched a village hall, but let it pass!) The new double-glazed windows will keep the hall warm, dry and quiet. The lower halves of the back wall have been re-surfaced and damp-proofed; during this work it was found that damp was entering the building from the street behind. After camera surveys had been done it was found that the water protection from the street needed up-grading but happily South West water stepped up to the mark and completed the work, replacing the main drain over a section of the wall. All praise to them. Some rotten joists were replaced because of damage caused by this leak so a section of the maple floor was lifted then replaced on the new joists, then the whole floor was sanded and re-varnished, with badminton court markings re-painted. So the Budgie-bashers are back in business. Much re-decorating has been
