Mayflower Heritage Trail As part of the Mayflower 400 commemoration, we’re working on a project to bring Dartmouth’s rich history to life. With the National Trust and English Heritage, we’re planning a three-part Mayflower Heritage Trail that will link with trails in 12 other towns and cities in the UK and Holland, each connected to the Mayflower story. Our Trail will explain Dartmouth’s unique part in these world-changing events and will be a permanent attrac- tion, allowing visitors to learn more about what happened in the wider context of our history. The project is being delivered jointly by Lindsay Ellwood and Spencer Wigley.

Wander, look and learn A Town Trail will take people around our historic streets, including Smith Street. Its name derives from the smiths and shipwrights who built and repaired ships here, when the tidal waters reached as far as this point. A focus of the tour will be Bayards Cove – the quay where the Mayflower and Speedwell were moored in 1620 – which remains essentially unchanged, as does Bayards Cove fort (1537). A Walking Trail will encourage visitors to walk into town along an ancient route from Townstal – the original set- tlement. Beginning at St. Clements Church (14 Century), the tour will allow a view of Old Mill Creek where wooden

Mayflower 400 is the commemoration of the sailing of The Mayflower to the New World, in 1620, an extremely significant event in history for both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. In conjunction with 12 other towns and cities across the UK, Dartmouth Mayflower has a number of ambitious Projects and Events planned during 2020.

boatbuilders still ply their trade. Winding their way downhill into Dartmouth, visitors will be walking in the footsteps of the Pilgrims. A River Trail will take people by boat past Pilgrim’s Hill, which is reportedly where the Pilgrims held a religious ser- vice outside the town before setting off on their voyage. The fact that the Pilgrims were not made very welcome in Dartmouth gives us the opportunity to explain the religious climate at this time. Under the 1559 Act of Uni- formity, rejection of the Church of England was declared unlawful and the resulting persecution of Separatist groups led to the Pilgrims leaving the country. John Flavel – a Separatist and Presbyterian minister who also faced adversity – began preaching in Dartmouth in 1656.

Mighty oaks from little acorns grow We plan to bring Dartmouth’s history to life through interpretation panels along the Trail as well as information leaflets and maps that will be available in other languag- es. For those choosing to follow the Trail independently, a smartphone app is being developed as a common platform to be used by all 12 Trail Towns. Guided tours will also be available for those opting to hear more about our heritage from knowledgeable local people.
