Owen Tomsett competes at the British Transplant Games

The next day I had Badminton, this was my first time and I won 2 and Lost 1. The BBC also filmed my match to be shown on Children in Need!

That evening was also the 3k Donor Run this is open to everyone including parents and was held along Newcastle Quay and the finish was across the Millennium Bridge. I came 2nd in my age group and was 43rd out of over 400 children/adults.

Newcastle United players presented awards

In August I once again competed in the British Transplant Games, all children and adults that compete have all had different transplants, I represent Bristol Children’s Hospital and we have all had Kidney transplants.

This year I have moved an age group up into the 12-14 year old boys. My first event was Table Tennis, this did not go too well and was knocked out in the first round.

The final day is my favourite, Track and Field, it was held at Gateshead International Stadium where famous runners like Steve Cram, Linford Christie and Jessica Ennis Hill have all competed, now my turn. I came second in my first heat for the 100m Sprint

I came 4th in the final which I was pleased with as the boys in front of me where all 14 years old, I did beat the boy who I came second to in the heats! I also did the Long Jump where I came 7th. Next year with lots of training I hope to be in the medals.

We finished the Games with a special Gala Dinner which was held at

Corsham School pupils experience Team Sky cycle fitness test

Back in the summer term Suffershire indoor cycling visited the Corsham PE Department for an afternoon. The AS level Physical Education students and BTEC Level 3 sport students were privy to an excellent fitness testing afternoon on 5 Watt bikes worth £2500 each. The premise of the visit was for students to learn about testing protocol and validity and to see a professional fitness instructor in action. The students....and PE staff were then put through their paces on the British Cycling Team Sky warm up programme for 20 minutes including a couple of sprints and climbs. This was followed by the Wingate Test, a 30 second maximal sprint measuring power. Some even managed to squeeze in a Peak power test which is a 6 second maximal sprint.

Team

Newcastle United’s Football Ground and had some special guests Jeremy Kyle and a couple of Newcastle Players presenting awards.

Next year the games are in Liverpool and I will be training hard in Badminton and Sprinting with my goal to be picked for the GB Team.

Laurence Shahlaei, former British strongest man World record holder in the yoke and dead lift and 4thWorld strongest man, visited Lydiard Park Academy to give local primary school students a talk about healthy lifestyles. Laurence shared photos of truck pulls, atlas stones and even dragging an aeroplane with students. A seminar on healthy eating and exercise was delivered. Students then participated in a mini World Strongest Child competition. They lifted atlas stones (medicine balls) and even beat him at the tug of war!

Year 12 Pupils put through their paces

Laurence is a fantastic Ambassador for health and despite numerous injuries is determined to get back to the top. At 6ft 3 and 130 kg Laurence was a gentle giant and answered all questions directed at him. This workshop was a Youth Sports Trust project under the Change For life scheme.
