Bridlewood Primary School Sports Week

In June, Bridlewood Primary School took part in a sports week. The week was designed to use some of our PE government funding to provide the children with an opportunity to try out a variety of different sports. The children tried sports such as tennis, archery, croquet, fencing, Zumba, street hockey, Trampolining, cheerleading, orienteering, golf and much more.

The children had great fun working on not only their physical skills but also on values such as determination, perseverance and patience. Many children discovered hidden talents and we hope that, as a result, they decide to take part in more physical activity, helping them to lead healthy and active life styles.

Feedback about the week from both children, parents and staff was very positive. Rosie Grieveson in year 4 said ice skating was her favourite sport: “I loved ice skating, I’ve bought some skates and I’ve started going to lesson, it’s so much fun!”

As part of the week’s activities, all of the children in year 4 and 3 spent a day at PGL Liddington where they tried abseiling, aero ball and problem solving activities. Maxwell McKendrick from year 4 said “The best thing about sports week was trying out abseiling

at PGL, I found it quite scary but I was determined to get to the bottom.”

The younger children in the school had a taster session from Rugby Tots. The Reception teacher Emma Christmas said “The children were so enthusiastic during the session and were still talking about rugby at the end of the week.” As a result of this positive feedback we are starting a Rugby Tots after school club to build on the enthusiasm shown in the taster session and keep the children active.

Year 2 teacher, Rachel Hickman was pleased with the how successful the week was: “It was great to see the children learning lots of new skills, they really worked hard and supported each other showing great determination. This attitude is something we hope they will transfer into all their class work.”

During the week the children took part in activities at our local secondary

schools. Groups of children enjoyed Trampolining, dance, gymnastics, basketball, cheerleading and athletics at Lydiard Park Academy and Nick Hatcliffe from Isambard School introduced the younger children to a variety of Multi skills activities and team games. The children really enjoyed having access to the sporting facilities provided by secondary schools.

Another highlight of the week was a visit to school from “Skippy John”. Throughout the day the children took part in skipping workshops, learning how to skip effectively and trying out skipping tricks. Many children chose to buy their own skipping ropes and since

the event, playtimes have been full of children skipping and keeping active.

Written by Jenny Hulse Sun shone on the Harnham Infant School Sport Week

Children at Harnham Infant School were jumping for joy as the sun shone on their annual Sports Week in the summer term. The older pupils put their skipping skills to the test

in a “Big Jump Off”, while reception children held their own mini Olympics. There were free, healthy breakfasts on offer as well as bike and scooter sessions.

A rugby World Cup tournament rounded off the super sporty week. The event was to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The school’s sports leader, Miss Brereton,

who organised the week, said, “It’s been amazing to see all the children get involved. They’ve been practicing their skipping every lunchtime and having so much fun.”
