Hilperton CE Primary School gets ‘Gold’!

Hilperton C of E Primary School is thrilled to have received the Gold Sainsbury’s School Games Award. They are the first school in West Wiltshire to be accredited for the prestigious Gold award this year.

Hilperton School has developed a Sports Council who play a vital part in voicing the opinions of students at the school about sport. They have implemented lunch time sporting activities, organised and run sporting afternoons and have conducted questionnaires to evaluate the success of sporting initiatives. Alfie, Year 6 Sports Ambassador,

said ‘it has been great leading the sports activities and helping the younger children develop their skills’.

In order to achieve Gold the school has provided all pupils with two hours of physical education each week and engaged at least 60% of students in extra-curricular sporting activities including cross- country, cricket and dance. They offer students a wide range of opportunities to compete both in curriculum lessons and in the wider community. This year they competed in a range of

different sporting competitions - Gym, Football, Orienteering, Dance, Cricket, Swimming and Cross Country. Staff have forged links with local sports clubs, signposting students to these clubs and attending events run by them. Head teacher Vicki Cann said ‘achieving Gold in the Sainsbury’s School Games Kite Mark is a reflection of our commitment to school sport and physical education’.

Trowbridge and District Football League goes from strength to strength

School football is a fantastic way to watch children at a grassroot level develop their passion for the game and during the Autumn Term, schools compete against each other at John of Gaunt Secondary School. Ben Rees (Year 6 teacher at Bellefield Primary School in Trowbridge) has been organising and running the league for 14 schools in the Trowbridge and District area for the past five years

and wanted to get as many children involved regularly to increase their love of the sport. Every child is rewarded for participating at the league whatever ability. The Trowbridge Schools Collaborative fund the medals which are awarded in front of parents in November to show that football is not just for the elite player. Sporting ambassadors and fair play awards are also acknowledged at the league. Teachers and coach’s vote on those who show responsibility and teamwork during the 5 week league.

I have experienced outstanding leagues for boys and girls when I worked in Swindon and recognised then the importance of promoting football in a league basis. Competitions are exciting, but when a league is organised, the buzz in the classroom as you wait for reports, blogs, league placing and statistics can be so rewarding for the pupils involved.

Year 10 pupils at John of Gaunt have officiated the league which supported their skills in PE and Young leading and many primary pupils have developed blogs and reports for their schools.

The League is split into two groups of 7 teams and the holders from 2014

Sports report from St Francis School

Football: The football team have started with two super wins against Tregoze and Redoaks. Mr Bloys is very pleased with the attitude and teamwork the boys have been displaying in the games.

Netball: Mrs Sellars is excited that we have entered a new league with schools in the area which is to start after half term. We are lucky to have a professional coach, Liam, who gives valuable advice and tactics on our Thursday training sessions. A big thanks

to our school PTFA “FAITH” for providing the team with a brand new kit.

Fencing: Buccaneer Blades (Liz & Kevin) have continued their expert tuition with a number of Key Stage Two pupils on Friday mornings – not the best time to start a session but all the children are very keen. A number of children have been learning fencing at school since it was first introduced and have become very accomplished fencers. Some have even continued to fence outside school.

The highlight of the year will be our annual competition against Sherton school in June 2016 – so there’s plenty of time to practise!

Gymnastics: This club, run by Sophie on Monday’s, started this year and was so popular! Unfortunately, it had to be restricted to 20 children and some missed out.

Swimming: Year 4 are half way through their 10 week swimming lessons at

Cricklade. Mr Jones & Mrs York are pleased to see so many children progressed considerably since their lessons in Year 3.

Tag Rugby: Another after school club available to our Year 3 – 6 children, run by Mr Jones. Children are enjoying the opportunity to try this team building sport especially at a time when the Rugby World Cup is in full swing.

Bellefield (Large Schools) and Holt (Small Schools) will have to play to a high standard to win again this year as the competition in the first two weeks has been excellent.
