Melksham Oak’s ‘Mad Dog’ Rugby Academy

This September saw an exciting addition to our 6th form and in particular our PE department with the introduction of former England Rugby Captain, Lewis Moody’s ‘Mad Dog’ Full time Rugby Academy. The concept to bring in a Rugby Academy was to encourage more 6th former students to continue their education whilst giving them the opportunity to pursue their rugby at a good level.

Securing the ‘Mad Dog’ Academy, exceeds this expectation. Having Lewis Moody’s vast knowledge of the game, being coached by him and his handpicked coaches in all areas of Rugby, help develop them to the best of their ability whilst focusing on promoting healthy lifestyles and good behavioural habits.

This is an exceptional addition for us as a school as it is creating a positive environment for students to be able to achieve in both academic studies, sport and social development.

“It is amazing to see how quickly and how well the boys have become a team, both on the pitch and also around school, and

how well they have integrated themselves into school life. There is already a sense of aspiration amongst lower school pupils to work hard at their rugby, and their studies, to try and become part of the Academy in future years.

From what was simply a concept a year ago, we now have something tangible that is clearly going to go from strength to strength” Owen Vince, Deputy Head at Melksham Oak School.

By immersing themselves in the Mad Dog rugby philosophy, players will understand the importance of the physical, technical, social and psychological aspects of the game, as an individual and as a team.

Players attend Academy lessons everyday whether this is training, strength and conditioning, analysis, nutrition or matches. These lessons are integrated into the timetable around their academic studies, with some after school actives and fixtures.
