Coaching in schools example of good practice

Following on from the last mapping phase for the Primary Sports Premium funding, the national partners selected a case study submitted by WASP, as a high quality example of good practice in Primary Schools, which they would like to develop for publication on the DfE website, coaching in schools portal, CSP Network website and other relevant websites.

WASP, Sports Coach UK and local partners have been working together to establish minimum standards of deployment for coaches working with young people in Wiltshire. WASP’s county coaching database, ‘Right Coach’ supports standards of coaching practice and delivery within the County.

The case study highlighted the impact of work of two well established private coaching providers delivering structured sessions in partnership with primary teachers in Wiltshire and Swindon.

A teacher mentoring project was developed to address the expressed lack of physical education knowledge, expertise and teacher confidence in primary schools. Many newly qualified teachers admit to being unprepared for teaching active and engaging sessions.

The project aimed to support teachers by giving them the opportunity to work alongside experienced coaches, providing them with the knowledge, lesson plans and confidence to deliver high quality PE sessions.

Full details of the case study will be available once published on the DfE website.

GB Athletes visit Christ the King School

In the summer term James Foreman and Kieran Showler-Davies, two Great Britain athletes who are both hopeful of reaching the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro visited Christ the King school. James and Kieran took an assembly for children from year’s two to six where they discussed the importance of exercise, nutrition and education.

After assembly James and Kieran led Athletics lessons for each class with the support of teachers and teaching assistants. The children really enjoyed the lessons which were both fun filled and physically demanding.

The West Wilts Dance Festival is back

It is in its 11th year now and will be held at The Forum, Bath on Tuesday 23rd February until Thursday 25th February 2016. Due to popular demand the event has been extended to three nights for the first time and we are hoping to have nearly 900 pupils performing. Another first is that last year we invited suggestions from pupils to decide this year’s theme. Livy (Y5) from North Bradley School emailed her suggestion of ‘Dance through the Ages’ and a panel felt this would be perfect!

All the information for this year’s festival will be sent out to schools on Monday 2nd

If you feel you could support in any way or would like more information please email Selwyn Widger on wg@kingdown.wilts.sch.uk

16 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay

November and West Wilts schools will have two weeks to enter and then it will be opened to entries from across the county, another first.
