…and businesses back diversity pledge

The first businesses have signed the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce’s (ABCC) ‘Diversity in Leadership’ pledge. Construction and civil engineering firm Balfour

Beatty Vinci and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust have both signed up to the pledge, agreeing to proactively participate in the ABCC Diversity in Leadership pilot, in order to address underrepresentation of women, LGBT, disabled, black, Asian and minority ethic (BAME) communities in leadership roles. The pledge was signed by Sara Brown, interim

chief officer for workforce development at the NHS Trust and Aman Sidhu, equality, diversity and inclusion manager for Balfour Beatty Vinci. Sara said: “One of our big focuses at the

moment is to ensure our organisation is diverse and that staffing fully reflects the diversity of the population of women, children and families we care for. “We know that the more senior our staff are,

the less BAME representation we have – something we really want to change. “When applying for jobs, we want candidates to see that we embrace diversity and although

‘We know that the more senior our staff are, the less BAME representation we have’

we have seen some improvement in BAME representation over the last 12 months, we recognise that we have a long way to go. “We hope that this pledge will enable us to

better engage with and encourage more people from BAME backgrounds – particularly in Asian communities – to come and work for us.” ABCC director Anjum Khan said: “I’m

delighted to welcome Balfour Beatty Vinci and Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust as two of 10 pilot organisations who have demonstrated that they are committed to seeing change.”
