Town Council welcomes Derrick as new mayor

Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council has elected a new mayor at its first full council meeting since this month’s elections. Councillor Derrick Griffin (pictured), who has

served on the Town Council since its inception in 2016, first as a Councillor for Newhall Ward and now for Walmley and Minworth, takes up the position of mayor. Derrick moved from Walsall to Walmley with

his late wife Jeanette in 1978. His two daughters attended Walmley Infant

and Junior Schools and completed their education at John Wilmott School. He spent a number of years working overseas, including six serving in the Royal Military Police in Kenya. Derrick is also an active volunteer. He has

served as chairman of the Parent Teachers Association at Walmley School and for the past 24 years has been secretary and treasurer to the Birmingham Branch of the Royal British Legion. He said: “My first task as mayor is to pay

tribute to the outgoing mayor, Cllr David Pears, for his hard work over the last 12 months. “As a new council we need to establish our

traditions and I look forward to working with our officers to build on the excellent work of our two previous mayors.

“I am proud of what the Town Council has

achieved in our first two years and am confident we can do a great deal more. I hope to meet many of our residents and support many local charities and organisations. Above all I promise to serve the whole community of Sutton Coldfield to the very best of my abilities.” Councillor David Allan has been elected as

deputy mayor.

Enjoying a glorious community summer

By Simon Ward Leader, Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council

The summer months in Royal Sutton Coldfield see a range of events that showcase the very best of our community and all its stakeholders. The Great Midlands Fun Run has raised

an astonishing amount for charity over the 37 years of its life and this year was no exception. 17th June saw the Boldmere Summer

Festival – another event that sees the community and local traders and groups come together to celebrate their local area and all that is great about it. The Town Council is proud to have

created its own landmark event with the Concerts In the Park on 30th June and 1st July. Now entering its second year the event attracts more than 10,000 people into the iconic Sutton Park to enjoy a fantastic mix of cultural events. Just a week later we see the Sutton

Stars tee off for charity

Former Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov hosted his third annual Charity Golf Day at The Belfry in support of children and families affected by leukaemia and cancer. The Bulgarian midfielder set up The Stiliyan

Petrov Foundation in 2013 following his battle with leukaemia. Since then, the foundation has held a series of fundraising events. Ex-Villa manager Martin O’Neill was among

those in attendance at the golf day. Petrov’s old Villa colleagues Luke Young, James Collins and John Carew also took part in the tournament, which saw celebrities partnering with guests to take to the tee in support of a charitable cause.

The golf tournament, on the famous Brabazon

course at The Belfry, was followed by a three- course meal along with live entertainment as well as an auction to raise funds for the charity and its nominated cause. This year, proceeds from the golf day went

towards the oncology ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, who have been supported by the foundation since 2013. Petrov said: “We have dedicated a lot of our

time to being a solid support structure for people to lean on. I felt it was incredibly important to support those going through similar situations.”

Community Games now entering its sixth year. The community games are an innovative combination of school sports day and village fete! Born in Sutton Coldfield the concept is now being explored by other locations. These events are all the product of a

great community spirit and a pride in the Royal Town. Our local businesses (not least the Chamber) play a key role in supporting these events both financially but also in their expertise and know how. The Town Council has a key advocacy role in ensuring that all stakeholders in our Town come together for the benefit of residents in all aspects of their lives. Royal Sutton Coldfield is a great place to

do business and it is also a great place to live. These events play a pivotal role in raising the profile of the town and delivering a vibrant local economy – long may they continue.
