Chairman role is another string to David’s bow
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has launched its first season under newly appointed chairman David Burbidge. Mr Burbidge recently took over
from former Chamber president Bridget Blow, who had spent six years in the role. Mr Burbidge is best known as
the head of Coventry’s successful bid to win the UK City of Culture title for 2021, and he is continuing his role as chairman of the Coventry City of Culture Trust. He is a former chairman of the
Belgrade Theatre and Coventry Cathedral Development Trust, and was also a trustee of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He said “I am honoured to have
been invited to become chair of the CBSO. I will do all that I can to secure and enhance the standing of our region’s world-class orchestra.” Bridget Blow said: “David is a
nationally-admired advocate for the arts and will bring to the CBSO
strong governance experience and a formidable fundraising track record. I have enjoyed my time as chair immensely and am pleased to be leaving the orchestra in such capable hands.” The CBSO’s 2018-19 season
features concerts and events curated by the orchestra’s music
director, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. Former conductor Sir Simon
Rattle will be returning for a special fundraising concert, and other guest conductors will be Kazuki Yamada. The season will also feature
violinist Gidon Kremer as artist-in- residence. Among musical highlights in
2018-19 will be the CBSO’s hugely popular ‘Friday Night Classics’ concerts, which will range from the music of the Harry Potter and James Bond movies to a celebration of Nat King Cole, marking the centenary of his birth.

AFL re-appointed to NHS framework
AFL Architects, which has an office in Birmingham, have been re- appointed to the NHS’s Shared Business Services (SBS) construction consultancy framework. NHS SBS was formed in 2005 to
provide a more efficient method of supplying business services to the National Health Service (NHS). The construction consultancy
framework exists to provide various estate and facilities services, ranging from civil and structural engineering to quantity surveying. It can call upon both SME and
national providers, to deliver either a single or range of services. In its SBS framework role, AFL will
be able to provide its NHS and wider public sector clients a compliant, cost-effective route to market. AFL director Sheldon Walsh said:
“We are delighted to have been once again appointed to the SBS framework, both as architects and design team leaders to a full multi- disciplinary team. “We are already working alongside Trusts under the renewed framework, and are looking forward to the future opportunities it opens up for AFL.”
