Start-ups procure a wealth of support
Among those aiding the Chamber’s business start-up programme by helping to guide the fledging firms is ex-Army officer Richard Beaumont. Mr Beaumont is managing director of Bromley Wood Associates Ltd,
based near Lichfield which is itself not that old, being set up in 2016. He has been helping the Chamber since last year, particularly with the workshops set up to help the start-ups learn about every aspect of business life. Prior to setting up Bromley Wood, Mr Beaumont spent 14 years in the
Army, and upon leaving the Armed Forces in 2003 he has worked in many industries, in both procurement and general management. These businesses have included construction, financial services,
aerospace and consulting. His last full time role was as chief procurement officer (CPO) of Co-operative Bank, as part of the team that helped rebuild the bank after its well documented problems in 2014. He said: “When I left the bank, I decided to set up a business that would
help companies improve their procurement as well as the soft skills that go with it and I have done this through conferences, one-to-ones and team training both in the UK and abroad. “My business aims to helps SMEs tackle the challenge of procurement.
This is about reducing spend and supplier risk as well as improving relationships with suppliers in order to drive innovation. Ultimately I want to help businesses grow both the top line and bottom line profitability. Procurement is a key area in any business; it’s not just about buying
things. When it’s done well, procurement helps to write the requirement of what a business needs (rather than what it might like with all the extras) and engage suppliers to work out how to meet that need with the right balance of time, price and quality. “It holds true for both goods and services. I have found that making this
work relies on some important soft skills, especially influencing, communication and negotiating. Like everything in life, success is built on good relationships and these skills help procurement teams to build them both within the business and with suppliers. “I have been working with the Chamber since 2017 to help business
owners build these skills through a series of half day workshops. “Being a business champion through these workshops is a pleasure.
Helping people who care about their business to become more effective is highly rewarding. “If you asked me what are the key take-aways from the sessions I run, I
would have to say learn to listen, be open, be willing to take risk, look for opportunities to collaborate rather than compete, be fair and share success.”
