36 LOADBANK TESTING
Loadbank testing - followed by energising an LED billboard
Case Study: Powerhire was recently contacted by a regular customer to carry out loadbank testing of 4 x 1500kVA permanent generators at one of its premises in the heart of the City of London. The generators are tested to prove their functionality in the event of a mains power outage to the building. The building under test housed companies with a number of successful recognised business brands - this meant that any downtime had to be kept to a minimum, reports WIP.
the heart of the City of London is never going to be easy. How- ever, Powerhire was able to test generator functionality in the event of a mains power outage in the structure. Downtime had to be kept to a minimum which meant that this test had to be carried out over a weekend. Generators No. 1 and No. 2

were tested successfully on Day 1 followed by Generator No. 3 and No. 4 on Day 2 . Powerhire’s engineers applied an initial load of 25% with an increase of 25% steps over a 15 minute period with each generator running at 100% load for a period of 4 hours.

told WIP: “After a successful weekend, the generators were cleaned, permits were signed off and the customer was left happy.” Powerhire was also
contacted by a Manchester- based company specialising in iconic outdoor digital media. The customer asked
Powerhire to provide generator power for their largest project to date - one of the largest LED billboards in Europe, which eventually ‘went live’ in December 2017. The screen was placed on the side of a warehouse at the entrance to Trafford Park in Manchester, the world’s first industrial estate, and just minutes away from the famous Old Trafford football ground. Powerhire was able to advise on the most appropriate equipment to support the type

of load needed and anticipated fuel consumptions. It recommended a suitable
sized generator and fuel tank to power a unique 306.24 sqm LED advertising billboard, second only in size to the one at Piccadilly Circus in London. The generator set chosen has been designed to run 18-hours per day from 6am to midnight, 7-days-a- week for an estimated six month period and has been fitted with an automatic stop/start timer. Powerhire supplied this Prime Rated Generator, 6000L Fuel Tank and 30 metres of cable.
During site negotiations
Powerhire’s Technical Sales Manager attended a meeting with the client, electrical contractors, building owners and agents to discuss the best location for the generator and
fuel tank on site. Once all parties were
completely satisfied with the solution on offer - Powerhire’s generator hire co-ordinator arranged for the equipment to be serviced, cleaned and loaded onto a Powerhire HIAB in preparation for its departure date. Powerhire transport personnel delivered all the equipment on the specified day to the required delivery area where it was off loaded ready to be installed. The innovative advertising
billboard launched successfully in December 2017 and is now regarded as a permanent iconic and visual landmark at Trafford Park Industrial Estate, Manchester.
