14 GENERATOR MARKET: REPORT
Generator sales sector projected to grow
According to the economic
analyst MarketsAndMarkets Inc. [see:
www.marketsandmarkets.com] the generator sales sector is expected to grow from an estimated US$ 20.93 billion in 2018 to US$ 27.24 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 5.41%, during the forecast period. The market is set to grow due to the increasing demand for uninterrupted and reliable power from all end users, as some of the best power grids are also subject to downtime. The diesel segment is expected to
be the largest generator sales market in 2018.
The diesel fuel-operated generator segment is expected to dominate the generator sales market during the forecast period.
Long running life, easy parts and fuel availability, capacity to handle varying loads, and quick response time have helped the diesel genera- tor market to acquire the largest share.
This segment is primarily driven by the increased demand for standby power from data centers, IT facilities, and healthcare infrastruc- ture. The industrial segment is expected
to be the largest market for genera- tors sales, by end user, during the forecast period.
The industrial end-user segment is expected to lead the generator sales market in 2018 and projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period 2018-2023.
In 2017 around 25% of global exports of diesel generators came from China
grown by about 16%, reaching US$270M market size. In Middle East, the results are mixed as
the biggest market (UAE) has declined by 14%, but some other countries like Iraq and Kuwait have grown by more than 30%. But the biggest drop is for the African
continent, with a decline of 18% compared to 2016, and a market around US$800M. It is actually the lowest level since years
In 2017, the global market of diesel
generating sets reduced by about 2% compared to 2016, after another decrease in 2016. This decline has been equal in term of units and US$ value globally but not been the same in all regions of the world, as some markets have shown some positive signs whereas some others have declined quite strongly, comments Romain Mocaër, a Consultant for PowerGen Statistics. From a global perspective, the mature markets such as Europe and North America have now recovered and shown some good signs in 2017 (2% growth for Europe, and more than 10% for North America), driven by the good local economies and construction industry. In detail, Canada and US market have
grown by about 10%, whereas in Europe, countries like Poland, Russia and most of Western countries have slightly increased (2-3%). However, some other regions like Asia
(-10%) and South America (-4%) have decreased especially in the high range of products. In South America, markets like
Venezuela have dropped by more than 50% due to economic situation, whereas in Asia the Chinese market has declined by more than 5%. But some territories have shown very good signs last year with some significant growths.
One of the best example is Bangladesh,
with a 50% market increase compared to 2016, with huge investments from the government in response to the lack or grid reliability, and big projects delivered last year. In South East Asia, Indonesia has also

for this ex-booming market and the declined has been in all ranges of products. Key countries like Algeria, Egypt and
Ghana have particularly suffered last year, with declines of around 20% each. There is still a big need of generators but the lack of foreign investments in the emerging economies as well as the low price level of natural resources have affected those markets. In term of origin of generators, China
has become the leading exporter since few years, and in 2017, 25% of global exports of diesel generators were coming from China (around 60% in terms of units). This trend has strengthened in 2017,
with both local Chinese OEMs becoming more and more successful in the emerging markets and most global brands having Chinese assembly to export generators out from China. PowerGen Statistics is a market- leading database dedicated to the power generation market worldwide. It calculates & updates the market sizes of diesel & gas generators by country and powerband. PowerGen Statistics has developed a tool to monthly monitor imports & exports of generators across the globe to keep customers aware of any market or competition movements every month.
