Brigham teenager Sam Kirkpatrick will be sponsored by Wigton Motor Club for the 2018 season. Sam (pictured right), currently a student at Keswick School will be competing in the MG Car Club’s MG Trophy race series at all the major UK circuits.
Wigton Motor Club are pioneering this new venture of sponsoring young drivers working their way up the motorsport ladder. Maryport’s Jack Palmer is also being sponsored in the BTRDA National Autotest Championship.
Wigton Motor Club are always looking at new ways to encourage youngsters into the sport and run a variety of novice events to introduce newcomers to the various disciplines.
Sam, who hopes to go to university to study accountancy, has been racing in karts since he was eight. He raced in the British Super 1 Championship in Cadet, Minimax and Junior Max with some success. He also raced in Europe in the Junior Max Class in his final season of karting, coming 10th in the BNL championship.
In 2016, he moved into cars, racing in the Junior Saloon Car series in a Saxo under the watchful eye of former BTCC champion Chris Hodgetts. In his first season, his best result was 3rd at Knockhill. In 2017, he raced again in the JSCC with MMR Racing, finishing 3rd overall with 3 wins, 11 podiums and 7 pole positions.

Sam’s parents, Bill and Michelle, own the Wheatsheaf Garage in Brigham and are both experienced racers in MGs of all ages. Sam will be racing in the MG Car Club MG Trophy Championship in the very competitive ZR170 class, a well-organised and hard-fought series with huge grids, over 12 races at six different tracks. Sam has been fast in testing, adjusting well to the extra power and grip of the MG. He realises it’s a big step up for him against some very experienced opposition. Hopefully, he will build towards some good results this season.
